Owls defeat the Blue Hens for the first time in the last eight tries

PHILADELPHIA – Breaking a streak of losses to the Blue Hens that dated back to 2003, Temple lacrosse rallied for an 11-9 win over Delaware (2-7) at home on Saturday afternoon. The Owls (6-2) got hat tricks from both Charlotte Swavola and Karly Cohen as they came back from a 7-4 deficit early in the second half.
Temple's last win over Delaware had come way back in 2002, and the Blue Hens had taken the last seven straight meetings.
Delaware struck first with an unassisted goal by Caitlin McCartney, but Cohen scored back-to-back goals for Temple to give the Owls a 2-1 lead. The lead lasted for just five minutes before the Blue Hens' Chelsea Fay, who would later finish with a hat trick, scored the first and last goals of a 4-0 run.
With 6:10 remaining in the first half, Delaware led 5-2. Stephany Parcell, who had assisted on Cohen's first goal, gave Temple life before halftime with a pair of goals. The second put Temple within one at the break, 5-4, and was scored with just seconds left in the half on an assist from Swavola.
Fay and McCartney opened the second half with goals for the Blue Hens in the first two minutes, widening the margin back to three, 7-4.
From there the Owls scored seven of the game's final nine goals, starting with a 4-0 run that included a pair of goals by Swavola and the third goal of the game for Cohen. Swavola's second tally in that run tied the game at 7-7, and Missy Schweitzer scored the last goal of the run to put Temple ahead.
Delaware tied the game for a fourth time at 8-8 and then took the lead with 12:15 remaining. Swavola connected on a pass from Stephanie Markunas to the game yet again, 9-9 with 11:30 on the clock, and Jaymie Tabor put the Owls ahead for good with 8:22 left on a free position shot.
Schweitzer scored the game's final goal on an empty net, giving Temple a two-goal cushion with 1:21 remaining.
The Owls out-shot Delaware 25-18 in the game, and got 15 draw controls to the Blue Hens' eight.
Temple will be back in action at home on Tuesday, March 20 at 3:00 p.m. against #18 Towson.
