Batey named Women’s Performer of the Week; Marquart tabbed Men’s Rookie of the Week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Temple's Jordan Batey (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) and Kristian Marquart (Munich, Germany/Wilhelm-Hausenstein Gymnasium) have received weekly awards from the Atlantic 10 Conference, the league office announced Monday. Batey was named the Women's Tennis Performer of the Week, while Marquart picked up the Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week honor. It is the first award for either player.
Batey went 3-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles action in a 2-1 week for Temple. The sophomore won all three singles matches in straight sets to improve to 4-0 at No. 3 on the season and better her singles win-streak to five-straight matches. With her trio of victories, Batey is now 15-9 in singles play. She also teamed up with Alicia Doms to go 2-1 in doubles play with the duo's only loss coming against #54 Penn State.
Marquart went 4-0 in two matches against league foes last week for Temple, securing two wins at No. 3 singles and two victories in doubles. The German import cruised to a pair of straight-set wins in singles, handily defeating La Salle's Joseph's LaBate, 6-0, 6-0, before downing Xavier's Richard Canelas, 6-4, 6-4. He also teamed with Dmitry Vizhunov for victories over La Salle's No. 2 tandem (8-1) and Xavier's No. 3 pair (8-6).
In its next action, the women's squad (6-8) heads across town to face Penn on Wednesday, March 21 in a 4 p.m. match. The men (5-7) travel to Delaware for a 2 p.m. match against the Blue Hens on Tuesday, March 20.
