Softball Drops 8-0 Decision to Ball State at Citrus Classic

3.2.12 | Softball

Robinson collects two hits in defeat

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Temple softball team dropped a tough 8-0 (five inning) game to Ball State in its second game of the Citrus Classic on Friday, March 2 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort. With their 5-1 win over Purdue earlier in the day, the Owls went 1-1 on day one.

Designated player Hanne Stuedemann got the Ball State (6-5) offense rolling in the top of the fourth with her first career home run. She also drew a bases-loaded walk to push across the Cardinals final run of a six-run fourth inning.

On the mound, Kim Mazzapica improved to 4-0 on the season by limiting Temple (3-4), which handed Purdue its first loss of the season earlier in the day, just two hits over five innings. Her TU counterpart Capri Catalano (0-2) had a rough outing over 4.0 innings of work, giving up eight runs (six earned) on seven hits while striking out three and issuing six walks.

Stuedemann started a six-run rally in the bottom of the fourth with her first career home run, a solo shot down the right field line with one out. Jessica Craft followed with an infield single, while Taylor Cox drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Jennifer Gilbert would follow with her second RBI hit of the game, driving the runners home with a double to center field.

An infield single from Loren Cihlar put two runners on for Amanda Montalto who singled up the middle to drive home Gilbert. After a lineout, baseman Audrey Bickel drew a walk to load the bases. A Temple fielding error allowed Amanda Carpenter to reach base and helped Cihlar cross the plate. Stuedemann would follow with a bases-loaded walk to bring home Montalto for BSU's final run of the fourth inning and move the score to 7-0.

The Cardinals scored the game's final run in the bottom of the fifth, thanks in part to a leadoff walk from Cox. After an Owls' pitching change, Gilbert singled down the right field line to put runners at the corners. Cihlar followed with a RBI groundout to the pitcher to give Ball State the eight-run victory.

Junior centerfielder Ali Robinson collected both of TU's hits, going 2-for-2 on the day.

The Temple softball team continues play in the Citrus Classic on Saturday with games against St. John's at 2:30 p.m. and Georgetown at 4:45 p.m.
