One of Five Finalists by Sports Business Awards

PHILADELPHIA – Bill Bradshaw, who has served as the Director of Athletics at Temple University for the last 10 years, is one of five finalists in the Athletic Director of the Year category for the 2012 Sports Business Awards, presented by Street & Smith's SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily.

The 2012 Sports Business Awards recognize excellence and outstanding achievement in the business of sports for the period from March 1, 2011 through February 29, 2012. Athletic directors from colleges and universities in the United States were eligible.

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 23, at the New York Marriott Marquis at Times Square.

Joining Bradshaw as finalists are Dave Brandon (Michigan), Mark Hollis (Michigan State), Jeff Long (Arkansas), and Ian McCaw (Baylor).

Last June, Bradshaw was named the 2011 Under Armour FBS Director of Athletics of the Year.

Bradshaw's 10 years at Temple have produced numerous highlights, most notably the announcement on March 7, 2012, that the University will join the BIG EAST Conference for all sports and the recent hirings of Al Golden, Fran Dunphy, Tonya Cardoza and Steve Addazio, as well as eight senior staffers, among several prominent hires. The Black Coaches' Association gave Temple a grade of “A” for the search process of its coaching hires.

Thirty-four Temple teams have advanced to NCAA Tournament play during his tenure while football has participated in a bowl game twice in the last three years.

In 2011, Temple became one of only six NCAA Division I institutions to have its men's and women's basketball teams compete in each of the last four NCAA Championships. Temple became the only Philadelphia school and Big 5 member ever to achieve this feat. Of those six, Temple is one of only three schools (Texas A&M and Tennessee) to have its men's and women's basketball teams compete in the last two NCAA Tournaments and its football team be bowl-eligible each season. In combined wins by its men's and women's basketball and football programs over the last two years, Temple ranks fifth with 121 wins, behind only Connecticut (141), Duke (137), Notre Dame (125), West Virginia (123), and ahead of Ohio State (120), Florida State (115) and North Carolina (109).

The athletic department has enhanced efficiency, productivity and strategic planning through organizational efforts under Bradshaw. A comprehensive operations and procedures manual has been developed, and athletics has exceeded its revenue budget in each of the past eight years. During the 2010-11 academic year, Temple Athletics had record numbers in fundraising, corporate sponsorships, and ticket sales, exceeding expectations by $1.6 million.

Recognizing the accomplishments of Temple's student-athletes is a point of emphasis under Bradshaw. The department of athletics annually holds a “Breakfast of Champions” to honor those who have excelled both athletically and academically by “committing to excellence”.

Temple ranked third among NCAA Division I institutions in student-athlete graduation rate above its student body in 2003-04, and had the fifth highest increase in student-athlete graduation rate that year. In 2006, Temple was one of 10 Division 1-A institutions to earn the Overall Excellence in Diversity Award bestowed by the Laboratory for Diversity in Sport at Texas A&M University. In 2009, Temple received 11 perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores.  Men's basketball and football posted their highest APR scores in school history in school history in 2011. Temple Athletics received full recertification from the NCAA in 2009.

Temple athletics has also undertaken a greater role in community service under Bradshaw. Via the Owl Outreach program, student-athletes have provided volunteer service to numerous community and non-profit organizations, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Temple Children's Medical Center and the School District of Philadelphia.

Bradshaw has also been responsible for upgrades to Temple's athletic facilities. He supervised the design and construction of the athletic complex on the Ambler Campus, featuring fields and amenities for the men's and women's soccer, baseball and softball teams. He has also overseen the football program's move to Lincoln Financial Field as well as the addition of a new state-of-the-art football practice field at Edberg-Olson Hall, courtesy of a private fund drive.

Later this year, a $48-million renovation and expansion of McGonigle and Pearson Halls, as well as a $10 million expansion of Edberg-Olson Hall, will be completed.

Temple athletics has also displayed its hospitality under Bradshaw, hosting the 2005 and 2011 NCAA Women's Basketball Philadelphia Regional as well as the first and second rounds of the 2004 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament and the 2003 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships. Temple has also been selected to host the 2013 NCAA Men's Basketball Second and Third Round games at the Wells Fargo Center.

Prior to his arrival at Temple, Bradshaw served as the Director of Athletics at DePaul University (1986-02) for 16 years as well as at his alma mater, La Salle University (1978-86) for eight years.

He also was the head baseball coach at Niagara University (1972-74) before moving on to becoming the school's Director of Alumni (1974-76).

A member of four Halls of Fame, Bradshaw owns a bachelor of arts degree in pre-law from La Salle University ('69) as well as a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Niagara University ('72). He resides in Radnor, Pa., with his wife, Yvette and three children, Billy (17), Paige (15), and Connor (14).
