Owls drop 8-0 opener, fall 10-1 in nightcap

AMBLER, Pa. – The Temple softball team could not get its offense going, dropping two games to visiting Iona at Ambler Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Owls fell 8-0 in six innings in the opener and dropped a 10-1 six inning game in the nightcap.

In game one, the Gaels scattered eight runs over the final four innings, including a four-run fourth, to come away with the victory. Iona got its runs on seven hits and took advantage of three Temple errors in the game.

Brooklin White (5-5) took the loss for TU, giving up seven hits, eight runs, walking three and striking out four. Only three of the eight runs White surrendered, however, were earned. Sarah Jackson (6-4) was the winner, scattering five hits over 6.0 innings, fanning four and issuing three walks.

Game two was a scoreless affair until the fourth inning when Iona exploded for six runs. The Gaels batted around in the inning, capitalizing on five hits and one Temple miscue.

The Cherry and White finally got on the board in the bottom of the frame. Sarah Prezioso led off with a double to right field and Stephanie Pasquale followed with her own two-bagger to left field to bring Prezioso around. Iona pitcher Alyssa Maiese settled in after that and struck out the side to escape with no further damage.

The Gaels got one more in the top of the fifth and iced the game with three in the top of the sixth, including a three-run shot from Maiese as she helped herself to the win.

Maiese (4-5) fanned seven in 6.0 innings of work, giving up four hits, one run and one walk. Capri Catalano (2-5) took the loss after 4.0 innings of work, eight hits and seven runs surrendered.

Pasquale collected two of Temple's four hits in the game, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI.

TU is 10-11 overall and opens up Atlantic 10 play at Charlotte this weekend with a pair of games. The Owls take on the 49ers at 3 p.m. Friday and again at noon on Saturday.
