PHILADELPHIA – Temple Running begins its third stage of the year on Saturday when the outdoor season opens at Franklin Field, the home of the Penn Relays. Both the men and women's track and field teams will be competing against the other four rival city schools at the Philadelphia Big 5 Invitational. The opening event will take place beginning at 3:15 p.m.
Following a fourth place finish at the indoor Atlantic 10 Championships, the men's side is anxious to return to action.
Senior Travis Mahoney returns to the outdoor track after being named the A-10's Indoor Performer of the Year after winning the 1 Mile Run and the 3000 Meter Run just a few weeks ago up in Kingston, R.I.. Mahoney, a second-team All-American last year, had a memorable 2011 season, as he won the 3000m steeplechase, shattering the A-10 Championships record and bettering his own school record with a time of 8:37.23.
To repeat its success in the outdoor session this spring, the Owls will look for the strong outputs they saw in sophomores Will Kellar, Josh McFrazier and Gabe Pickett.
Senior Louis Parisi has had his sights on returning to action since the cross country season came to a close. Parisi shares his views on the upcoming stretch of meets in the video posted above.
Temple's women's team is also coming off a very impressive fourth place finish at the Atlantic 10 Conference Indoor Championships.
Freshman Margo Britton has had an immediate impact in field events, as her and senior Alanna Owens have met ECAC qualifications in most of their competitions in the throwing events this winter.
Rookie Jenna Dubrow has also made her presence known in the conference this year through what she has done in the cross country and the indoor season. Dubrow has shattered several school records in her brief time running for the Cherry and White, including in the 1 mile run at the Armory Colleigate Challenge.
Bolstering the Owls' attack has also been Tonney Smith, Ambrosia Iwugo, Isatta Kenneh and Tashima Stephens.
