Women's Rowing Competes at Murphy Cup

PENNSAUKEN, NJ. - The Temple women's rowing team competed in the 30^th Memorial Murphy Cup Saturday on the Cooper River. The Owls rowed in four events on the day with the Varsity 8+ reaching the finals and the Lightweight Varsity 8+ advancing to the Petite Finals.

In the lightweight varsity 8+ comprised of Ellie Oken (coxswain), Laura Turner (stroke), Gina Inverso (seat-7), Kate Taylor (seat-6), Lauren Kidd (seat-5), Kelsey Joniec (seat-4), Sarah Jennings (seat-3), Caroline Slusarcyzk (seat-2), and Mary Kate Louge (seat-1) placed second with a time of 8:28. SUNY Buffalo went on to win the heat with a time of 8:06. "The lightweight eight did a fantastic job today by winning a silver medal in very challenging headwind conditions”, said head coach Jason Read

The Cherry and White won in the collegiate varsity 8+ petite final with a time of 7:42 beating Rutgers by a total of four seconds. The boat was comprised of Ellie Oken (coxswain), Vicky Joye (stroke), Claudia Loeber (seat-7), Brittany Adell (seat-6), Taylor Wasserleben (seat-5), Joanna Sutor (seat-4), Jeanine Lees (seat-3), Paigo O'Sullivan (seat-2) and Jackie Lees (seat-1).

"This was a great weekend of early season racing for the entire team at the largest Murphy Cup Regatta since its inception in 1982, said Read. With over 1,400 competitors from 43 schools, the competition at this year's Murphy Cup was more severe than previous years. The Varsity Eight event had top Atlantic 10 and Patriot League teams racing. Our young team performed well across the board. Many of the girls who raced today in the Novice boats only joined us within the past three weeks. Their learning curve will be exponential over the next few weeks as we increase our volume of training and racing."

The Owls return to action on Saturday March 31^st, when the team splits up with half heading out to California for the San Diego Crew Classic and the remaining hosting Drexel and Williams College on the Schuylkill.
