Batey and Doms Win At Three Doubles; Mavrina Takes No. 1 Singles Match
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The 67th-ranked UNCW women's tennis team captured the doubles point and swept five of the six singles matches to get past visiting Temple, 6-1, in a non-conference match Wednesday at the UNCW Tennis Complex.
The Seahawks (6-4) won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to secure the important early point. The Owls did salvage a doubles sweep with an 8-6 win at the third flight from Jordan Batey and Alicia Doms.
The match was clinched early in singles play, as UNCW came out and won the first four matches for a 5-0 edge.
Despite the match being decided, play continued and Yana Mavrina again thwarted the sweep with a convincing straight-set win at number one over Olga Blank, 6-1, 6-1. TU nearly earned another point at the fifth flight, but Alyssa Ritchie outlasted Agnese Rozite, 5-7, 6-2, 10-6, in the three-set thriller.
Temple (4-5) continues its challenging spring break road trip with a noon match at Coastal Carolina on Thursday.
