Owls defeat Cleveland State, 6-1, but lose 5-3 to Central Michigan

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Reigning Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week Brooklin White picked up another win in the circle as Temple softball split games on the first day of the USF Under Armour Showcase Tournament. The Owls (5-7) defeated Cleveland State 6-1 in their first contest before falling 5-3 to Central Michigan. Stephanie Pasquale led Temple with a pair of hits in each game, going 4-for-8 at the plate on the day.

Cleveland State's Dara Toman led off the bottom of the second with a home run for a 1-0 Viking lead, but it would prove to be her team's only run of the game. The Owls answered with a four-run third inning with hits from Ali Robinson and Alex Stermel and a number of miscues by the Cleveland State defense.

All four runs were scored with just one out, and the Owls looked as if they would add more but stranded three on the base to end the inning.

Pasquale singled to lead off the fifth inning, and her pinch runner Lacey McKeon later scored on a sacrifice fly from Meaghan Marley. Temple got its sixth and final run in the top of the sixth when Samantha Schoell singled to drive in Robinson who had reached on a walk.

White allowed just two hits in the win, and walked only one batter while striking out a pair.

The Owls' Capri Catalano took the loss against Central Michigan later in the day, despite recording seven strikeouts. Two of those strikeouts came in the top of the third before Central Michigan rallied to end the inning with two runs. The Chippewas staged another two-out rally in the top of the fifth to take a 4-0 lead, and they increased it to 5-0 in the sixth inning thanks to a RBI double.

Temple got three hits in a row from Sarah Prezioso, Pasquale and Marley in the bottom of the sixth, but only Prezioso went on to score as the Owls left two on base. They made another rally in the bottom of the seventh with two unearned runs, but could come no closer.

The Owls will play three more games in the tournament including a pair on Saturday morning when they face Western Michigan at 9:15 a.m. followed by East Tennesee State at 11:30 a.m.
