Owls fall 4-0 to Western Michigan; defeat Eastern Tennessee State 4-3
CLEARWATER, Fla. – Temple's softball team split another pair of games at the USF Under Armour Showcase on Saturday, March 10. The Owls fell to Western Michigan, 4-0, to open the day before turning around and defeating Eastern Tennessee State, 4-3, in the second game.
In the first game, the Broncos scored the only run they would need in the top of the first. Tara Buchanan's two-out double to right center field score Diana Patterson who reached on a walk.
WMU added three more insurance runs in the top of the fifth. Courtney Rousseau led off the frame with an infield single and then stole second. Gracie Barstad reached on an error to bring in Rousseau before Colleen Lynch registered an RBI single to left field, scoring Barstad. Jennifer Tschetter capped the scoreing with a base hit to right center.
Temple had a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh after Kayla Cook singled to right field and Christina Sykora reached on a two-out fielder's choice. The inning, and game, ended with a line out back to pitcher Meredith Whitney.
Brooklin White (4-2) took the loss in the complete game effort, allowing nine hits, four runs and four walks while striking out five.
Against ETSU, The Owls (6-8) struck for three runs and three hits in the first inning to grab a 3-0 lead. The Owls scored their first two runs on Stephanie Pasquale's bases loaded single to right field, while Cook drove in Sarah Prezioso on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Sam Lower put the Bucs on the board in the third with an RBI double to left center. Tara Hartnett drove a two-run triple to left field in the sixth to score the game-tying runs.
TU quickly went back on top using some Eastern Tennessee miscues to its advantage. Cooke reached on a leadoff error, and wisely moved to second when no one was covering the bag. Pinch runner Alysse Pujol came in and quickly moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Gina Sciarrone. Pujol scored what would prove to be the game-winner on a passed ball just two batters later.
The Bucs had the game-tying run on in the seventh, but couldn't capitalize.
Jessica Mahoney (2-1) picked up the win, giving up three runs and six hits in the complete game effort.
