PHILADELPHIA - Missed opportunities told the story for Temple lacrosse in a 14-7 loss to Duquesne (8-4, 1-1) on Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field. The Owls (7-4, 1-1) had more draw controls and fewer turnovers than the Dukes, but were unable to make a run when they needed to as they suffered their first Atlantic 10 loss.
Missy Schweitzer recorded her first hat trick of the season in leading Temple with three goals and an assist. Stepanie Markunas scored twice for the Owls while Karly Cohen and Lea Britton recorded one goal apiece.
Caitlin Prince, one of the leaders in scoring in the A-10, was unstoppable for Duquesne with five goals on the afternoon. Clare Hurley also notched a hat trick for the Dukes with three goals.
Duquesne's Casey Denk scored the first of her two eventual goals early in the game for a 1-0 Dukes lead. Markunas converted on a free position attempt eight minutes into the game to tie the score at 1-1, but it would be the only time Temple did not trail for the remainder of the contest. Prince put in three goals as part of a 4-1 run for Duquesne, and scored a fourth before halftime. The Dukes scored the final three goals of the half to lead 8-3 at the break.
Cohen scored on a feed from Markunas in the first minute of the second half, and the teams traded goals for nearly 20 minutes of play. Prince's fifth goal with 11:34 remaining put her team up 11-6 and started a 3-0 run for Duquesne that put the game out of reach for Temple.
Duquesne's Liz Walker had a strong game in goal with eight saves on the Owls' 22 shots. Tess Bishop made five saves for Temple.
The Owls will be at home once again for their next contest, a non-conference game against Princeton at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4.
