Women's Tennis' Quest for Atlantic 10 Title Squelched by UMass

Owls, seeded fourth, take top-seeded Minutewomen to the wire before falling, 4-3
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Vying for a chance to play in the championship match of the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship, the fourth-seeded Temple squad took on top-seeded Massachusetts in a marathon match on Saturday morning at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The Owls ultimately dropped a 4-3 heartbreaking decision to the Minutewomen in a match that took over four hours to complete.
Things started off strongly for TU with the pair of Yana Mavrina and Agnese Rozite teaming up to defeat Hazuki Onaga and Jessica Podlofsky, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles. UMass responded, however, with wins at the first and second flights to claim the doubles point.
Mavrina continued winning with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Yuliana Motyl at No. 1 singles to even up the match. Wins from the Minutewomen at flights two and four made it a 3-1 match in favor of the #1 seed, but the Cherry and White battled back to tie it up again at 3-3.
Jordan Batey survived a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 3, and Rozite came out on top of another three-set thriller at No. 5, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5, to bring the match down to the sixth flight decision.
Two freshmen squared off in a high-pressure situation with a championship berth on the line. Temple's Maame Ama Osei won the first set 6-2 but Chanel Glasper evened it with a 7-6 second set victory. The UMass rookie got the best of Osei in the third set, winning 6-2 and clinching the 4-3 victory, and a spot in the championship tilt on Sunday morning, for her squad.
Temple ends the season with a 14-11 overall record.
