Kastner and Pasquale lead Temple to doubleheader sweep at Saint Joseph's

Owls win opener 3-1, come from behind for 7-3 victory in nightcap
MERION STATION, Pa. – Freshman Julia Kastner was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in a 3-1 first game win, and sophomore Stephanie Pasquale went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored in the 7-3 nightcap victory as the Temple softball team swept Saint Joseph's in a Wednesday afternoon Atlantic 10 doubleheader.
TU (24-19, 9-5 A10) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Kastner scored on a fielding error by the Hawks. The second baseman had reached earlier in the inning with a single to right field.
The Owls made it 3-0 with two more in the third. Senior Samantha Schoell and sophomore Sarah Prezioso led off with two singles, and Pasquale was hit by a pitch to load the bases. It looked like Saint Joseph's (17-26-1, 6-9-1 A10) might get out of the inning unscathed, getting two quick outs including a force at the plate. But Kastner stepped in and drew a walk to force a run across. Freshman Lacey McKeon followed that with a single to plate another run.
The host team got a run back in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 3-1 game. Sophomore pitcher Brooklin White carried a one-hitter into the frame, but gave up a single to Maria Ficca that scored Morgan Earling, who had reached earlier on a hit by pitch.
That was all the scoring either team would do however, and the Owls took the game one victory, 3-1.
White (13-9) struck out four, allowed four hits and walked three in the complete game effort. Erin Gallagher (8-13) took the loss, giving up nine hits, three runs, five walks, and striking out four in 7.0 innings.
McKeon (2-for-3) and Prezioso (2-for-4) joined Kastner with multiple hits in the game.
Temple took another 1-0 lead in game two on Pasquale's solo homerun over the right field fence to lead off the second inning. It was shortlived, however, as Saint Joseph's took over 3-1 after three, capitalizing on four hits and one error in the inning.
That score remained until the Owls got within one with a score in the top of the sixth. Junior Ali Robinson doubled to left center with one out, advanced to third on a Hawks error, and scored on a Prezioso fielder's choice.
After holding SJU in the bottom of the frame, TU entered the seventh trailing 3-2 and down to its final three outs. Saint Joseph's pitcher Taryn Ashway sat the first batter down swinging, but then the comeback rally began. Kastner singled to left field, followed by an error that put runners on the corners. Senior Christina Sykora singled down the left field line to drive in Kastner and knot the score, 3-3.
Robinson singled to center field to load the bags, but the home team got a force at the plate for out number two. It looked like it would head to the bottom of the inning all tied up when Prezioso struck out swinging, but the pitch was wild and got away from the catcher, allowing Prezioso to reach first and another run to come across. Pasquale and junior Kayla Cook each singled, driving in one and two runs, respectively, before Ashway finally got a line out to get out of the inning.
The damage had been done, however, and despite getting two on with two hits in the bottom of the seventh, Saint Joseph's came up empty in the 7-3 come-from-behind Temple win.
Capri Catalano (7-7) got the complete game victory, scattering eight hits over 7.0 innings, striking out four and walking none. Ashway (9-13) surrendered eight hits and seven runs, only two of them earned, while fanning nine and walking one.
In addition to Pasquale's 3-for-4 performance, Robinson also collected multiple hits with a 2-for-4 game at the plate.
