PHILADELPHIA – The Temple softball team hosts Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis for a pair of critical league games this weekend. The Owls (24-19, 9-5) take on the Billikens (19-29, 6-8) in a 3 p.m. game on Friday, before hosting the squad again for a Saturday game at noon.
TU enters the games winners in seven of its last nine games, including a key doubleheader sweep at cross-city rival Saint Joseph's on Wednesday. The 24 wins this season are the most for a Temple squad since the team reached 30 victories in the 2004 season.
Temple and SLU have only met 11 times in the history of the series that began in 1993. The Billikens hold a slight advantage in the series, winning six games. The Owls did, however, record a sweep at Saint Louis last season, winning by scores of 9-1 and 1-0.
TU continues to be led at the plate by Sarah Prezioso. The sophomore is batting .348 with a team-best 47 hits, three triples, three homeruns and 29 RBI. Also getting hot recently are sophomore Stephanie Pasquale and junior Ali Robinson. Pasquale is second on the team with a .311 average, clubbing a team-best 13 doubles, which also is the second-best total in single-season history. Robinson is hitting a career-high .304 and has scored 37 runs, the fourth-highest single-season run total in the Temple annals. The team is collectively batting .258.
In the circle, sophomore Brooklin White sports a 13-9 record with a 3.30 earned run average. The right-hander has started 20 games, completing 12 of them with two shutouts. Senior Capri Catalano evened her season record at 7-7 with a win on Wednesday, and the right-hander leads the team with a 2.99 ERA. As a staff, TU holds its opponents to a .250 batting average and sports a 3.31 earned run average.
Saint Louis is led on the mound by Hannah Huebbe (10-12, 3.57 ERA) and Julian Austin (4-10, 3.44 ERA). As a team, the Billikens allow opponents to hit for a .237 clip while posting a 3.53 ERA.
Offensively, Jessica Buschjost leads the squad with a .327 average, recording a team-high 51 hits, which is also tops in the Atlantic 10. As a whole, SLU is hitting just .225.
