Britton Re-Breaks School Shot Put Record; Owls Post Solid Results In Day One Of Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Margo Britton did it again. Competing against high-caliber competitors from all around the nation at the 118th Penn Relays, Britton shattered the Temple record for the longest mark in the shot put for the second time this season. Breaking her own record (15.06 meters, set on April 7) with a mark of 15.71 meters, Britton claimed second place in the event, making her the runner-up behind NC State's Tremanisha Taylor (16.44 meters). In addition, Temple had other stellar performances, producing three other ECAC qualifying marks.
In addition to the shot put, Britton placed 15th in the discus throw with a mark of 42.81 meters (140'5"). Joining her in reaching conference qualifying marks was senior Alanna Owens, who placed fourth in the Shot Put Eastern event with a mark of 14.40 meters. The Owls' 4x400 meter relay sqaud, comprised of Ambrosia Iwugo, Michelle Davis Timothy, Tonney Smith and Sheina Roberts met ECAC standards with their 26th place time of 3:44.19 in the event.
Owens also competed in the hammer throw, where she took a 24th-best mark of 46.44 meters.
Kiersten LaRoche and Brianna Alverez represented Temple in the long jump. LaRoche posted an impreesive mark, landing 5.66 meters for eighth place, while Alverez's mark of 4.35 meters ranked her 25th in the event.
In the 400 meter hurdles, Jade Wilson and Tessa West crossed the finish line just footsteps apart. Wilson claimed 31st place with a time of 62.18, which was ahead of West in 33rd with her time of 62.20.
Placing third in their heat of the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 47.05, Isatta Kenneh, Dia Dorsey, Andrea Butler and Gennie Depass placed 26th overall in race. In their heat, the four runners for Temple combined for a time that placed them only behind Penn (46.71) and Kansas State (46.8).
When the Penn Relays continue Friday, Temple's women's side will take part in the 4x200 heats and the sprint medley.
