U.S. Olympic Trials Track & Field Schedule
EUGENE, Ore.—This afternoon, the USA Track & Field Olympic Trials get underway out in Eugene, Oregon and will run for 10 days, culminating on July 1. Among the nation's competitors, Temple University will be represented by assistant coach Shameka Marshall and senior Travis Mahoney.
Mahoney will be the first of the two to compete for a chance to go to London, England for the 2012 Summer Olympics, which will be held July 27-Aug. 12. Off the heels of his fifth place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships , earning him status of and first team All-American two weeks ago, Mahoney will be running in the 3000-meter steeplechase on Monday, June 25 at 8:25 p.m. ET. Should he be among the 14 runners to qualify for the final, he would then run again in the same event Thursday, June 28 at 9:30 p.m. ET.
The native of Old Bridge, N.J. holds Temple's fastest time in the 3000-meter steeplechase with an elapsed time of 8:36.10, which he set back on May 27, 2011 in Bloomington, Indiana. Mahoney, the 2011 and 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference steeplechase champion also holds the A-10's all-time record for the best time in the event at 8:37.23 (set at the 2011 A-10 Outdoor Championships).
In the last calendar year, Mahoney has become a two-time NCAA All-American and was named the A-10's Performer of the Year for both the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
Since graduating from Rutgers in 2006, Marshall has continued to pursue her career in running and will be making her third attempt at reaching the Olympics. When she takes part in the long jump Friday, June 29 at 6:30 p.m. ET, she will be returning to a familiar stage, as she has took part in the trials back in 2004 and 2008. The long jump finals will take place Sunday, July 1 at 6:00 p.m. ET.
Last October, Marshall went to Guadalajara, Mexico for the Pan American Games, where she was a silver medalist after reaching 6.73m/22-1 in the women's long jump.
Some of her accomplishments during her running career include placing seventh in the last Olympic Trial (2008) she took part in. Earlier that year, she was the runner-up in the long jump at the USA Indoor Championships. A year earlier she won USA NACAC Team Gold Medal in the long jump in El Salvador after taking the silver medal with her 4x100 meter relay squad. During her final year of collegiate track & field, Marshall was named the 2006 ECAC Outstanding Indoor & Outdoor Athlete of the Year and was a two-time All-American
