STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Training camp workouts have come and gone for the Temple women's soccer team and now it's time to turn the focus to Sunday's season-opening match on the road against the Stony Brook Seawolves, which will commence at 2:00 p.m. from Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed will be provided by clicking the links above.
The Seawolves will have one game under their belts before Sunday's contest with the Owls, as it takes on another Atlantic 10 Conference team in the Rhode Island Rams Friday on the road.
A year ago, Stony Brook suffered an injury-ridden season, but bounced back with a 5-0-4 spring record and are picked fifth in the America East Conference's preseason coaches poll.
Looking to rebound from a 5-12-1 2011 campaign, Temple is once again led by Matt Gwilliam, who is in his second year as the Owls' head coach. The team is returning 14 members from last season's squad that improved its Atlantic 10 Conference win total from the previous season and had its highest finish in the league since 2005. Building off of that, 15 freshmen—the most in Division-I women's soccer and in program history—have been added, giving the 2012 squad much more depth and more dynamic pieces.
With such a large group of newcomers, Gwilliam has tried to instill values and a culture that promotes learning to play together as a unified team, so that success can be produced collectively. So far, Gwilliam has been satisfied with the camaraderie that has been developed among the ladies during camp and is now excited to see how it converts on the playing field beginning this Sunday.
Among the core returning, senior Kate Yurkovic and junior Karly O'Toole will be looked upon for leadership, as they'll be serving as the team captains. Yurkovic played in all 18 games last season, allowing her to lead the team in minutes played while being a force offensively, as she placed second on the team in shots. O'Toole, a transfer from Syracuse, was a major impact in her first season with the Owls in 2011. Playing as a defender, she helped her teammates anchor five shutouts—the most by a Temple team since 1995. In addition to her contributions in the defensive zone, she went three-for-three on penalty kicks, two of which served as game-winning goals.
Returning from a redshirt season due to suffering an injury in the opening game of the season at Iona last year, redshirt junior Jackie Krostek is back on the front line for the Owls in 2012 after playing every game for the team in each of her first two full seasons. Senior Morgyn Siegfried and junior Lauren Heath provide experience and depth to the unit of forwards, while freshmen Brendi Ernst, Sarah Scheidell and Lauren Berry will be looked upon to provide an offensive boost that the Owls had difficulty finding a year ago.
Along with Yurkovic, senior Jourdan Brill and junior Amanda Ward, who proved to be valuable over the course of 2011, are among the returnees to the Owls' midfield, who will be joined by freshmen Shannon Senour, Paige Rachel, Jordyn Richman, Katie Burgess, Lexi Crocker and Kylie Hoang.
A year removed from five shutouts, the Owls retained key pieces of its defense in the likes of seniors Casey Greco, Brittany Wollner and Gabby Lopez, juniors Karly O'Toole and Kaity Dychala and the team's lone sophomore Alyssa Kirk. Looking to add even more depth and bolster the unit will be freshmen Kayee Harner, Paula Jurewicz, Erin Lafferty and Rachel Barbella.
In between the posts, redshirt senior Tara Murphy is back after collecting five clean sheets in net in 2011, helping the Owls go 4-0-1 in those contests. In the final weekend of the season, she stood strong in net and didn't allow a goal in back-to-back games against Duquesne and St. Bonaventure, earning her Atlantic 10 Player of the Week. Senior Gillian Kacsuta has proven to be a strong force in net during her time at Temple. Last year, when not getting the nod to play as a goalkeeper, Kacsuta saw a significant chunk of time as a field player. Joining the platoon of keepers on the team is freshman Shauni Kerkhoff, a dominant keeper while playing for Olentangy Orange High School, who will looking to get a gauge on the college-level game from Murphy and Kacsuta.
