PHILADELPHIA—
The start to the 2012-13 Temple Running season gets underway Friday afternoon, as the cross country slate opens for the Owls when they host the first-ever Friend Invitational on the course of Belmont Plateau at West Fairmount Park. The shot gun for the men's 8k race will go off at 3:00 p.m., preluding the women's 6k race, which will begin at 3:45 p.m.

Going up against the Owls in their season-opening meet will be Atlantic 10 and city-rival squads La Salle and Saint Joseph's— both of which are familiar with the course at Belmont Plateau.

Temple begins the season having just a couple weeks of training and mentoring from newly hired assistant coach Adam Bray, who will do much of the coaching for the Owls' cross country teams. As a volunteer assistant at Illinois and Maryland, he attributed to the success and development of his runners and helped produce program-best meet finishes and several NCAA regional qualifiers.

When the men's side of the Friend Invitational gets underway, the Owls will be running eight of the 10 runners on the roster. Travis Mahoney is returning for his redshirt year in the cross country season after taking last fall to concentrate and prepare for the steeplechase at the track & field NCAA Championships and Olympic Trials. While Mahoney is back with the team, he will not be running in Friday's meet against La Salle and Saint Joseph's.

Four runners from last year's men's team that placed 10th at the A-10 Championships and fifth at the IC4A Championship run, return and look to help the Owls have greater success in the 2012 season. Sophomores Cullen Davis and Matt Kacyon provided the Owls with a lot of depth and solid finishes in their rookie seasons, combining with several team-best finishes from juniors Will Kellar and Phil Fanz.

Returning from a program-best finishes in multiple meets last season, the women's side looks to build off the success and promise it demonstrated last year.

Sophomore Jenna Dubrow, who led the Owls at six meets during her rookie season is back and will be relied on to give Temple that same boost.

Seniors Victoria Gocht, Rayna Kratchman, Dierdre MacFarlane and Tonney Smith will be looked up to for their leadership by the underclassmen. Temple women's squad consists of just two freshmen in Janie Augustyn and Christine Bettis, so the Owls are hopeful that the experience can lead them to more consistent high finishes in 2012.
