PHILADELPHIA— Picking up where she left off last season, sophomore Jenna Dubrow led the Temple Women's Cross Country to a second place finish in the team's season-opening at the Friend Invitational with her first place overall time of 19:05 on Friday afternoon at Belmont Plateau.
Remembering their former teammate Roswell Friend, who suddenly passed away at the start of the 2011 season, Temple Cross Country planned to open the 2012 season with a meet that would be run in remembrance of him. Hosting their first meet since reestablishing the cross country program at Temple University, the Owls saw this as the perfect opportunity and reason to hold a meet.
“Since last year, we have wanted to do something as a team that could honor Roswell Friend,” head coach Eric Mobley said. “We are keeping Roswell in our hearts and we plan to run and host this meet in his honor every year going forward. We had a great turn out today—and I was very excited about that.”
Running against a pair of city-rival and Atlantic 10 Conference foes, the Owls hauled in the runner-up spot behind La Salle (29) with 36 team points, while beating out Saint Joseph's (63).
Senior Tonney Smith turned in a solid finish time of 21:05 to take sixth place overall, as sophomore Chelsea Carleton crossed the finish line in 21:07 to place inside the top 10 at seventh overall. Senior Rayna Kratchman also posted a strong finish time in her first meet of the season with a 10th place time of 21:20.
“We ran a plan similar to the men's race: sit back in the first half and then execute in the second half of the race,” assistant coach Adam Bray said. “We had a different plan for Jenna [Dubrow] and she took it by the reigns. Overall today, we had a strong race and our team got a good experience in this first race, so I look forward to the season ahead.”
From here, the Owls will begin to prepare for their next race, which will be held at Lehigh University—the site of the annual Paul Short Invitational on Sept. 28.
