FARMINGDALE, NY - Freshman Brandon Matthews carded a six-under par 64 on the final round of the McLaughlin Sunday to lead Temple to a 10th place finish at the 16-team invitational held at the prestigious Bethpage Red Course. It was the lowest round at The McLaughlin, and the lowest by a Temple golfer since Walter Brown shot a school-record 63 at the 1973 Yale Invitational.
"In my opinion he is the best freshman in the country," said Temple head coach Brian Quinn on Matthews."More importantly he is a nicer kid and a really hard worker."
Matthews, who also set the Owl freshman mark for a single round, finished tied for seventh with an even par 210 (72-74-64). Senior Devin Bibeau was four shots behind his teammate (71-69-74,214) and tied for 15th place. Sophomore Matt Crescenzo was next for the Owls and tied for 48th with a 220 (73-72-75). Sophomore Paul Carbone (77-75-75, 227, t-69) and junior Russell Hartung (77-83-82, 242/83rd) rounded out the squad.
Auburn won The McLaughlin with a 10-under score of 830. The Tigers Jake Mondy was the medalist, carding an eight-under 202 with all three rounds sub-par (67-68-67).
