FULLERTON, Calif. – Concluding its farthest road trip since 2006, Temple Men's Soccer fell to California State Northridge by a count of 2-1 at Matador Soccer Field on Sunday evening. The Matadors poured on goals in the 39th and 77th minutes, allowing them to take a commanding lead with nearly 12 minutes to play. With little time to make a comeback, freshman Jared Martinelli (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) tallied the first goal of his collegiate career and nixed the shutout when junior Ryan Bradbury (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) threw the ball to him in the 89th minute.
Controlling the ball for a majority of the match, the Matadors outshot the Owls by a blistering 25-7 deficit. Of Cal State Northridge's many shots, only 11 were on target, as eight were stopped by Temple senior netminder Bobby Rosato, who made his second straight for the Owls.
The scoreless bout was broken by Beto Velasquez when he connected on a shot that was crossed to him by Brian Behrad as the clock approached the 40th minute.
Trailing by a goal when the teams retuned from halftime, the Matadors managed to maintain their relentless pressure and kept the Owls from making any significant changes to their gameplan.
Aggressiveness between the two teams brewed from the end of the first half through the remainder of the match, resulting in three yellow cards for each team. Overall, the foul count was relatively even, with Cal State being whistled 13 times to Temple's 11.
Following a failed clear by the Owls, Edwin Rivas capitalized for the Matadors as he swiped the ball, turned and fired from just yards away, nailing the lower right corner behind Rosato.
The Owls drop to 1-3-1 on the year and finish the California trip with a record of 0-2-0. Temple returns home to the Ambler Sports Complex Friday afternoon for a 2:30 p.m. match against Saint Peter's.
