Calafiore And Wilson Lead Owls To 2-1 Victory Over Saint Peter's
9.21.12 | Men's Soccer
Postgame Interview: MacWilliams | Martinelli
AMBLER— Using its strongest offensive pressure of the season, Temple Men's Soccer blasted a season-high 28 shots in its 2-1 win over Saint Peter's at the Ambler Sports Complex Friday afternoon. Senior Cody Calafiore set the pulse of the match when he scored his first goal of the season to put the Owls on the board in the 13th minute. Extending the lead in the opening seconds of the second half, redshirt sophomore Chas Wilson tallied what would eventually prove to be the game-winner, as the Peacocks threatened to make a comeback when sophomore Noah Sadaoui scored in the 66th minute.
Fresh off Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week honors, freshman Jared Martinelli continued to showed signs of becoming a rising star for the Cherry and White. Having at least a point in each of the previous three games entering Friday, Martinelli extended his scoring streak when he was credited with the assist on Calafiore's goal. Junior Nolan Hemmer inked his name on the scoresheet for the first time this season, as he was credited with the secondary assist on the tally that got Temple out to an early lead.
Wilson has been equally as impressive over the same four-game stretch. With the help of junior Vaughn Spurrier 52 seconds into the second half, the University of Delaware transfer scored his fourth goal in as many games, putting him as the team's current leader in points with 12.
Following Calafiore's goal, the physicality of the match and the tension between the two teams started to brew.
In the 19th minute, Calafiore had a chance to net his second goal within a six-minute span, as he was awarded a penalty kick, but with Saint Peter's netminder Carlos Suarez reading it all the way to the lower-left corner, the match stayed at a one-goal margin.
From that point on, Temple's offensive pressure became threatening. Closing out the first half with 17 shots, the Owls ripped eight of them in the direction of the net. For the match, Temple poured on a season-most shots on goal, having 13.
Junior Bobby Rosato was not tested often, as the Owls defense limited Saint Peter's to just six chances. Seconds after Luca de Stasio subbed in, he made a steal off the Owls and quickly pushed the ball over the middle and into the box, where Sadaoui was able to kick it right behind Rosato.
After being carded in the 59th minute, the goal by Sadaoui was a momentum-changer for the Peacocks, since the deficit was just a goal, but Temple would keep the Peacocks from having any more significant chances, despite Saint Peter's outshooting the Owls, 13-11 over the course of the final 45 minutes.
With the victory, the Owls move back to within a game of the .500 mark, holding a record of 2-3-1 on the season before hosting Howard (0-9-0) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Sunday's game against the Bison will be played in conjunction with Youth Soccer Appreciation Day at the Ambler Sports Complex. For more information on the events, which will take place before, during and after the game, click here.
