NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Temple senior PK/P Brandon McManus (Hatfield, Pa.) is one of 11 FBS football student-athletes named to the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, the insurance company and the American Football Coaches Association announced on Tuesday.
As one of college football's most prestigious off-the-field honors, the award recognizes a select group of college football players committed to making a difference in their communities.
Since 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® has shown a spotlight on the countless “good works” and remarkable stories of service by student-athletes at all levels of college football competition. Award recipients represent the sport's finest in terms of character and leadership in the community.
McManus is a senior placekicker and punter for Temple. A 2012 preseason All-BIG EAST selection by Phil Steele's College Football, he handles all kicking and punting duties for the Owls. The biology major, cited on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, has played in EVERY game of his collegiate career.
On the career charts, McManus also holds the career record for field goals made (50) and is No. 2 in scoring with 284 points. He is just 40 points shy of catching RB Bernard Pierce [2009-11] who is the career leader with 324 points.
McManus continues as Temple's career punting leader with a 45.84 average [55 punts and 2,521 yards].
He is one of eight current players in the country who handled ALL kicking.
McManus had the most community service events during the 2011-12 academic year with 11. He has participated in the annual Thanksgiving food drive, the Diamond Street clean-up, A Mile in Her Shoes, Read Across America, Owls for the Cure, and the Shore Tour as well as numerous hospital visits and Ronald McDonald House visits.
Temple is the only school in the country to have a AFCA Good Works Team® honoree each of the last three years. In 2011, OL Wayne Tribue became the fourth Owl to make the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® since 2003. In 2010, linebacker Amara Kamara received the honor.
