LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Moving beyond the midway point of the schedule, Temple Women's Soccer gears up for its final pair of non-conference matches this weekend, as it travels to upstate New York, where it will face the Siena Saints on Friday and the Marist Red Foxes on Sunday. Both battles against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foes will start at 4:00 p.m.
TEMPLE NOTES…
Entering their final tune-ups before beginning their final Atlantic 10 Conference schedule next weekend, the Owls are in search of their first win in their last four games. Despite going 0-2-1 in that span, Temple has demonstrated one of the stingiest defenses any opponent will see. In those last four games, Temple has allowed just two goals, compliments of a stellar effort put forth by the defensive unit bolstered by freshman netminder Shauni Kerkhoff. Through five games this season, Kerkhoff owns a goals against average of 0.46 and has made 31 saves on 33 shots faced, giving her a .939 save percentage. Of the nine games it has played thus far, the Owls have been involved in six games by which have been decided by one goal or less.
The 2012 season has been frustrating for the Owls in regards to their scoring chances not making it into the net. To date, the Owls have scored just four times this season—two of which have been off the foot of senior captain Kate Yurkovic, who leads the team with four points. In last Sunday's home match against Hartford, the Owls blasted a season-high 21 shots, but with the Hawks' unyielding defense, Temple was unable to get on the scoreboard for the third straight match.
ABOUT SIENA…
First up on the road trip for the Owls is Siena at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon. The Saints, riding a three-game win streak, including two in a row at Siena Field, will look to continue its hot streak after losing the first four games of the season. Before losing their home-opener to Delaware, Siena owned a 20-game unbeaten streak against non-conference opponents on their home field. Coming into Friday's match with the Owls, the Saint have lost just once in the last six years in their home field to a non-MAAC opponent. Siena has had its offense spread throughout its lineup this season, as all six goals have been scored by a different player. Kelly Ristoff and Lisa Valenziano are tied with a team-lead three points each.
Keeper Taylor Booth has two shutouts on the year and holds a 1.14 goals against average. Through seven games, she has made 37 saves and has allowed eight goals.
In last season's meeting at the Ambler Sports Complex, Yurkovic evened the score at one apiece in the 53rd minute, but Siena responded with goals by Ashleigh Barone and Lindsay Tegas within the game's final 15 minutes, to defeat the Owls 3-1. Siena leads the all-time series against Temple, 4-2-0.
ABOUT MARIST…
Wrapping up non-conference play for the season, the Owls will finish up the weekend road trip by visiting Marist on Sunday afternoon. The Red Foxes are a team that appears to be going the opposite direction of Siena, as they have lost three of their last five games after starting off 3-1-0. Before hosting the Owls, Marist will host Binghamton on Friday evening.
Chelsea Botta is on a torrid pace for the Red Foxes, having four of the team's 14 goals this season. With an assist also on her stat line, she leads Marist with nine points. Rycke Guiney has been a threat as well, as she has three goals and seven points. Holding down the defense for the Red Foxes, Andrea Wicks and Caitlin Landsman have each seen time in between the goal posts. Wicks has played in all eight games, where she has turned away 26 shots. Both keepers have been credited with one shutout each.
Sunday's meeting marks just the third time in history that the Owls and Red Foxes have met. Last season's meeting was cancelled due to Hurricane Irene. The Red Foxes hold the all-time series lead with a record of 2-0-0.
