Matthews Continues Hot Play, Tied for Lead at Hartford Hawk Invitational

Owls in fifth place after first day of competition

SOUTH KENT, CT - Temple University freshman Brandon Matthews carded a four-under par 68, the best round among the 87 golfers, on the second round of the Hartford Hawk Invitational to tie for the lead at the 16-team tournament held at the Bull's Bridge Golf Club Monday.  Matthews' stellar performance helped Temple to a fifth place showing, 18 strokes behind first-place Hartford.


Matthews, the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, shot a two-over 74 in the morning before catching fire in the afternoon.  Sophomore Matt Crescenzo (77-76) and senior Devin Bibeau (80-73) were next for the Owls and tied for 28th with nine-over pars 153. Sophomore Paul Carbone (74-80, 154/t33rd) and junior Russell Hartung (88-84, 166/t77th) rounded out the squad.

The tournament concludes Tuesday with one-round of play.
