Freshman leads Temple to sixth place in 16-team field
SOUTH KENT, CT - Temple University freshman Brandon Matthews continued his hot start to his Owl career, winning the Hartford Hawks Invitational Tuesday with a two-under par 214. Matthews, who entered play tied for the after Monday's first two rounds, carded an even-par 72 on the final day at the Bull's Bridge Golf Club to tie for first with Iona's Dylan Newman and Sacred Heart's Peter Ballo. Matthews eagled on the first hole of the sudden death playoff to take the title.
Matthews' stellar performance helped Temple to a sixth place showing among the 16 teams in the field. Host Hartford won the Invitational with an 875 score. Boston College and Sacred Heart tied for second with identical 895 scores. They were followed by Rhode Island (897), Connecticut (899), Temple (903), Rutgers (906), George Washington (911), Fairfield (921), Iona (922), Hofstra (925), Seton Hall (925), Lehigh (929), Central Connecticut (932), Bryant (938) and Holy Cross (970).
Sophomore Matt Crescenzo (77-76-71, 224) tied for 15th while senior Devin Bibeau (80-73-76, 229) tied for 27th for the Owls. Sophomore Paul Carbone (74-80-82, 236/t56th) and junior Russell Hartung (88-84-85, 251/t79th) rounded out the squad.
Temple next competes this weekend at the McDonald Cup in New Haven, Conn.
