Owls see success at Penn and Hamlin singles flights

PHILADELPHIA - Temple's men's tennis team was in action again this fall, playing at the First Annual Penn Invitational, being held at the University of Pennsylvania on Friday-Sunday, September 28-30. Six players were in action on Friday for the Owls.

Kacper Rams opened the day with a three-set win over Minnesota's Brendan Ruddock and the Penn flight, defeating the Gopher 6-7, 6-1, 10-5. He will take on Will Spector of Brown at 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

Also winning his opening round match was freshman Nicolas Paulus. Playing at the Hamlin flight, Paulus was a 7-5, 6-2 winner of Bastian Bornkessel of Binghamton. He will take on Iowa's Andres Estenssoro in the quarterfinal round on Saturday.

Kristian Marquart dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Juan Pablo Ramirez of Minnesota in the opening round of the Quaker flight, and will face Alex Frakes of Saint Peter's in the consolation quarterfinal.

Hicham Belkssir fell in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 11-9, to Tucker Saxon from Minnesota in his opening round match of the Ben Franklin flight. The rookie plays Jason Simon of Buffalo in the consolation quarterfinal. Also playing at Ben Franklin was Hernan Vasconez, a 6-3, 6-4, first round loser to Princeton's Michael Katz. Vasconez will face Lawson Barter of Saint Francis (Pa.) in the consolations.

Maros Januvka was the final singles player for Temple, taking on Drexel's Paul Stauskas at the Blue flight. Januvka dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision and will play Kevin Pijper of Saint Francis (Pa.) in the consolation first round.

Paulus and Vasconez were the only Temple pair to win a match in doubles play, defeating Ruben Haggai and Florian van Kann of Binghamton, 8-5, in the opening round of Flight B. The duo was stopped in the round of 16, however, falling 8-3 to Jonathan Carcione and Dan Richardson of Princeton.

Rams and Marquart received a bye in the opening round of doubles play at flight A, and then dropped an 8-4 decision to Damien David and Ivan Veresch of Buffalo in the round of 16. Belkssir and Januvka teamed up at Flight B to take on Barter and Pijper, falling 8-4.

No consolation doubles matches will be played.
