Rams and Paulus compete in main draw
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's tennis team continued play at the First Annual Penn Invitational on Saturday, being held at the University of Pennsylvania on Friday-Sunday, September 28-30. Of the six players in action, Kacper Rams and Nicolas Paulus were to only two Owls still in the main singles draw.
Rams faced Will Spector of Brown in the quarterfinal round of the Penn flight. He won the first set, 6-2, but Spector recovered for wins in the next two, 6-2, 10-5, to take the match.
Playing at the Hamlin flight, Paulus fell in three sets to Iowa's Andres Estenssoro in the quarterfinal round. Like Rams, Paulus won the first set a 6-3 win, but dropped the final two, 6-4 and 10-8, to have his quest for a title cut short.
In consolation play, Kristian Marquart took on Alex Frakes of Saint Peter's in the quarterfinal of the Quaker flight to open the day. Marquart was a 6-3, 6-0 winner, and advanced to face Sergio Carvajal of Saint Francis (Pa.), defeating him 7-5, 6-1. He moves on to the finals of the consolation draw on Sunday.
Hicham Belkssir was one of two Temple players at the Ben Franklin flight. Belkssir dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Jason Simon of Buffalo in the consolation quarterfinal. Teammate Hernan Vasconez got past Lawson Barter of Saint Francis (Pa.), 6-2, 6-4, but was stopped by Daniel Grauel of Norfolk, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals.
Maros Januvka was the final singles player for Temple, taking on Kevin Pijper of Saint Francis (Pa.) in the consolation first round of the Blue flight. Januvka was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Pijper before dropping a 6-4, 6-1 decision to NJIT's Jack Felich.
Marquart will be the only Temple player active on Sunday.
