Women's Basketball Travels to St. Bonaventure for Atlantic 10 Opener on Sunday

PHILADELPHIA - The final Atlantic 10 season for Temple women's basketball begins on Sunday, Jan. 13 at defending conference champ St. Bonaventure. Tip-off is at 1:00 p.m. as the Owls (6-8) look to get fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza her 100th career win. The Bonnies (7-8) handed Temple its only conference loss last season on their way to a 31-4 record and an appearance in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
THE OPENING TIP
•Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza is going for win number 100 at St. Bonaventure...She has a career record of 99-46.
•After a six-game road swing over 36 total days, the Owls finally returned home and broke a six-game losing streak with a 68-41 win vs. Western Michigan on Jan. 7...Victoria Macaulay's 22 points led four Owls who scored in double figures, including Tyonna Williams who notched her second career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 12 assists.

Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza is now 99-46 all-time, and is going for win number 100 when the Owls travel to St. Bonaventure. All four of Cardoza's teams have won at least 20 games, and three of four earned NCAA Tournament berths.
SCOUTING ST. BONAVENTURE
The Bonnies, who went 31-4 a year ago and advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, have taken a hit from the departure of an extremely talented, four-member senior class. St. Bonaventure is 7-8 so far this season, and is coming off back-to-back losses. The Bonnies do have a strong record at home, going 4-1 so far. Doris Ortega leads SBU with 11.5 ppg and 6.1 rpg. Similar to the Owls, the Bonnies have proven to be a stronger team in the second half of games, with 486 second-half points compared to 356 first-half points.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. ST. BONAVENTURE
Temple leads St. Bonaventure 31-18 in the all-time series, with both teams having long strings of wins until the last few years. Since 2009 each team has won three games. The Bonnies handed Temple its only A-10 loss last year, 74-65. In 2010-11, the Owls won in both the regular season and in the quarterfinals of the A-10 Tournament.

Temple is 16-14 all-time in Atlantic 10 openers and has won seven out of the last nine including two in a row. Each of the last two have been nail-biters. In 2010-11, the Owls won the A-10 opener at Charlotte by a narrow margin of 60-57. Last year, Kristen McCarthy hit a jumper with 0.2 seconds left to give Temple a 56-55 win at Richmond.
WILLIAMS TIES RECORD WITH 12 ASSISTS
Sophomore Tyonna Williams dished 12 assists in the Owls' win vs. Western Michigan on Jan. 7, tying the Liacouras Center record for assists in a game. Her performance also ties for third all-time at Temple in a single game. Williams added 13 points to finish with the second double-double of the season and of her career.
BACK ON THE RIGHT TRACK
The Owls' 68-41 win vs. Western Michigan on Jan. 7 was sorely needed after a string of six straight losses. The victory was a convincing one, with four players scoring in double figures, led by Victoria Macaulay with 22 points. Tyonna Williams notched a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 12 assists. Natasha Thames led all players and tied her season high with 12 rebounds.
Temple recorded a season-low 12 turnovers along with a season-high 22 assists, and out-shot the Broncos 44.6 percent to 23.6 percent.
LOSS AT HOWARD A GAME OF CONTRADICTIONS
Temple's recent 61-58 loss at Howard on Jan. 4 was a tough one, as the Owls held a lead of as many as 17 points with just over 13 minutes remaining. Temple shot a season-best 59.1 percent from the field in the first half (13-of-22), but a season-worst 25 percent in the second half (6-of-24). The Owls' 36 first-half points were a season-high, as was their eight-point halftime lead.
TOUGH SCHEDULING
As of the latest RPI report from rpiratings.com, Temple's schedule is the eighth-toughest among NCAA Division I teams. Others in the top eight include Stanford (1st), Tennessee (2nd), Baylor (3rd) and Connecticut (4th).
MACAULAY TAKING CHARGE
Along with leading the team in a number of categories on the stat sheet, senior center Victoria Macaulay ranks in the top five among all Atlantic 10 players in five areas. She is averaging 15.1 ppg (5th), 9.3 rpg (5th), has a field-goal percentage of 51.5 (2nd), has 2.0 blocks per game (3rd) and 7.1 def. rpg (2nd). Her numbers are particularly impressive when compared to the rest of her career. She averaged 3.0 ppg as a freshman, 4.6 ppg as a sophomore and 9.7 ppg as a junior.
THREE-POINT BARRAGE
It had been almost two years since Temple made more three-pointers than the 11 the Owls hit at Georgetown on Jan. 2. Against Richmond on Jan. 29, 2011, Temple hit a program-record 14 treys. The barrage against the Hoyas included 5-of-8 from Tyonna Williams as well as three treys apiece from Meghan Roxas and Rateska Brown.
THAMES NEARLY PERFECT
On her way to scoring a career-high 19 points at Howard on Jan. 4, redshirt junior Natasha Thames was almost perfect from the field, hitting 7-of-8.
