PITTSBURGH— Sophomore Brittanie DeMeno set three new career-highs while working all four events in Saturday's quad-meet at the University of Pittsburgh. As a team, Temple Women's Gymnastics showed significant improvement from last week's season-opener and posted a score of 190.00 to earn fourth place against highly-touted programs in host Pitt, Maryland and Cornell.
Maryland won the meet title with a score of 195.975, ahead of meet host Pitt (195.650) and Cornell (191.800).
“Going into this meet, we wanted to do things better than we did last week at GW,” head coach Aaron Murphy said. “We knew the areas we needed to improve on from our first meet, so we were very concentrated on doing that tonight—and we did. I am very proud of this team. In each of these last two weeks, we have had to make sudden changes to our lineup and the girls have been resilient and have been ready to jump in and give their all.”
Coming into Saturday's meet, DeMeno's goal was to hit an all-around score of 38.000 through the four events. Her score of 37.925 set her just points shy of that, but in all, she was very pleased with her performance, which included career-high scores for her on vault (9.575), beam (9.675) and in the floor exercise (9.725).
“I honestly will say it was crazy going up against big schools like Pitt and Maryland,” DeMeno said. “I was very excited to be able to hit my routines and set career-highs and I can't be any happier to be this close to my goal this early in the season, so I'm excited to go out there again next week and try to pursue that.”
Temple's best event on Saturday was on the balanced beam for the second straight week. After taking first place in their season-opener a week ago, the Owls posted a strong score of 48.300 for third place.
Sophomore Sylvie Borschel led the Owls on the beam and tied for ninth overall in the competition with her score of 9.725, A week after making her collegiate debut and return to action since being recognized with the ECAC Coaches' Choice award sophomore Taylor Rakus bettered her score on the apparatus from a week ago with a 9.650.
Unexpected but prepared to perform, sophomore Alexandra Forcucci made her collegiate debut when she was substituted into the lineup for junior and team captain Heather Zaniewski after she sustained a minor injury in an earlier event.
Forcucci took to the vault in her first event as a Temple competitor and scored an 8.950.
The remainder of the vault lineup combined to tally a score of 47.625. Sophomores Lauren Capone and Stephanie Verry posted like scores of 9.625 to lead the Owls in that event.
On bars, Zaniewski returned to action and set Temple's top score in the order with a 9.550. Sophomore Natali Ruzich improvised on the score from her season-opener performance, as she was awarded a 9.325, while her classmate Alexis Arena scored 9.200 of her 37.350 all around points on bars.
On the mat, Verry had an impressive demonstration in the floor exercise with her team-high score of 9.850, which placed her fifth overall in the event and gave her a new career-high. Capone also notched a new personal best score with her 9.575, as the Owls totaled a score of 47.975 in the event
Temple (0-9) will have one more tune-up before its upcoming home meet, as will make its way to New Hampshire for next Saturday's 4:00 p.m. competition.
