THE OPENING TIP
•Temple is coming off back-to-back Atlantic 10 losses for the first time since the 2002-03 season, narrowly losing 53-51 to VCU on Jan. 16 before being outmatched at Duquesne in a 64-45 loss on Jan. 20.
•Penn will be playing its final Philadelphia Big 5 game while Temple is playing only its second...The Quakers are 1-2 and the Owls are 0-1...Villanova has already clinched the city title with a perfect 4-0 record.

SCOUTING PENN
Penn is 7-7 overall this season, 0-1 in the Ivy League and 1-2 in the Philadelphia Big 5. The Quakers have lost two straight and three of their last four, including losses to Saint Joseph's and Villanova. Early in the season, they nearly stunned Virginia but lost 68-65. Junior Alyssa Baron, the Ivy League's scoring leader in both her freshman and sophomore seasons, leads the team with 15.3 ppg and 6.0 rpg.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST PENN
Temple holds a 48-15 advantage in the all-time series against Penn. The Owls have won the last eight straight contests as well as 15 of the last 17. Temple won on its home court a year ago, 72-47. The 2010-11 meeting was the closest of all eight wins, as Temple held on for a 62-55 win at the Palestra. Three years ago the Owls won 55-31 at home. Penn's last win was on Dec. 9, 2003 by a score of 70-64, at Temple.
COLD SPELL LEADS TO FIRST A-10 LOSS
In a game that had been close most of the way, an eight-minute scoreless stretch for the Owls in the second half against VCU proved too much to overcome. In the final minutes Temple cut an 11-point deficit to two after a 13-4 run, but could not tie the game despite having 17 seconds to do so on its final possession. The Owls shot a season-worst 28.6 percent from the field (20-of-70), and had only one player reach double figures as Rateska Brown scored a career-high 22 points.
CARDOZA WINS THE 100TH GAME OF HER CAREER
Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza got the 100th win of her career in the Owls' 67-59 win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13. The milestone came in Temple's A-10 opener, which was against the only team to defeat the Owls in the A-10 regular season last year. Cardoza is now 100-48, and reached her 100th win four games sooner than her predecessor Dawn Staley, who had 50 losses before reaching 100 wins.
BROWN BREAKS OUT
Sophomore Rateska Brown has been the Owls' leading scorer in each of the last two games, leading Temple in scoring for just the first two times this season. She scored a career-high 22 points including a career-high six three-pointers against VCU on Jan. 16, and followed it up with a team-high 15 points at Duquesne on Jan. 20. Brown also recorded a career-high six steals against VCU, and averaged 6.0 rebounds per game in the two contests.
SWEET REVENGE
The only blemish on Temple's A-10 slate last season was a loss to St. Bonaventure, and the Owls have now already avenged that defeat with a win over the Bonnies in this year's A-10 opener. The 67-59 win was not an easy one, as Temple trailed by seven with six minutes left. The Owls closed the game on an impressive, 19-4 run to come away victorious and give head coach Tonya Cardoza the 100th win of her career.
LEARNING NOT TO LET GO
After struggling mightily with their ball-handling for much of the non-conference season, the Owls recorded fewer turnovers for three straight games than in any game before. They committed just 12 in the win vs. Western Michigan on Jan. 7, and then a season-low 10 in the win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13. Against VCU on Jan. 16, the Owls had 13 turnovers. The three games were the first three in which Temple recorded fewer turnovers than its opponent. The Owls stumbled in a loss at Duquesne, committing 25 turnovers.
TRENDING
Some trends have emerged after Temple's first 17 games of the season. The most noticeable trends including the Owls being 7-3 when out-rebounding opponents, going 0-6 when being out-rebounded, going 5-2 when their starters outscore the opponents' starters, and going 4-0 when scoring 65 or more points.
WILLIAMS TIES RECORD WITH 12 ASSISTS
Sophomore Tyonna Williams dished 12 assists in the Owls' win vs. Western Michigan on Jan. 7, tying the Liacouras Center record for assists in a game. Her performance also ties for third all-time at Temple in a single game. Williams added 13 points to finish with the second double-double of the season and of her career.
TOUGH SCHEDULING
After the first 13 games of the season, the RPI report from rpiratings.com had Temple's schedule listed as the eighth-toughest among NCAA Division I teams. Others in the top eight included Stanford (1st), Tennessee (2nd), Baylor (3rd) and Connecticut (4th). The list updates each week, and Temple's recent opponents have pushed the Owls further down the ranks.
MACAULAY TAKING CHARGE
Along with leading the team in a number of categories on the stat sheet, senior center Victoria Macaulay ranks high among all Atlantic 10 players in five areas. She is averaging 14.4 ppg (6th), 9.0 rpg (5th), has a field-goal percentage of 49.7 (4th), has 2.0 blocks per game (3rd) and 6.9 def. rpg (2nd). Her scoring numbers are particularly impressive when compared to the rest of her career. She averaged 3.0 ppg as a freshman, 4.6 ppg as a sophomore and 9.7 ppg as a junior.
MACAULAY DOUBLES UP SEVEN TIMES
Victoria Macaulay notched her seventh double-double of the season in the Owls' win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13. She scored a game-high 23 points to go with a game-high 12 rebounds in the A-10 opener, and hit 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Other highlights among her double-doubles include a game-high 25 points to go with a game-high 13 rebounds at Kent St. on Dec. 6, a game-high 20 points to go with a game-high 11 rebounds in a win vs. Syracuse on Dec. 2, and a career-high 27 points to go with 10 boards in a win vs. Northeastern on Nov. 17.
BACK ON THE RIGHT TRACK
The Owls' 68-41 win vs. Western Michigan on Jan. 7 was sorely needed after a string of six straight losses. The victory was a convincing one, with four players scoring in double figures, led by Victoria Macaulay with 22 points. Tyonna Williams notched a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 12 assists. Natasha Thames led all players with 12 rebounds. Temple recorded a then season-low 12 turnovers along with a season-high 22 assists, and out-shot the Broncos 44.6% to 23.6%.
MACAULAY HONORED AFTER BIG WEEK
Victoria Macaulay led the Owls to a 2-0 week with wins over Western Michigan and St. Bonaventure, and was recognized as the A-10 co-Player of the Week, the co-Big 5 Player of the Week, and the Under Armour OwlSports.com Player of the Week on Jan. 14. She scored a game-high 23 points to go with a game-high 12 rebounds against the Bonnies, and scored a game-high 22 points in the win vs. Western Michigan.
THREE-POINT BARRAGE
It had been almost two years since Temple made more three-pointers than the 11 the Owls hit at Georgetown on Jan. 2. Against Richmond on Jan. 29, 2011, Temple hit a program-record 14 treys. The barrage vs. the Hoyas included 5-of-8 from Tyonna Williams as well as three treys apiece from Meghan Roxas and Rateska Brown.
THAMES NEARLY PERFECT
On her way to scoring a career-high 19 points at Howard on Jan. 4, redshirt junior Natasha Thames was almost perfect from the field, hitting 7-of-8.
TWO BIG WINS LOOKING BETTER AND BETTER
Two of the Owls' wins this season, which were big even at the time, are looking better and better as the season goes on. Temple defeated Syracuse on Dec. 2 to hand the Orangewomen their first loss, and it was the only non-conference loss for Syracuse, now 15-2 and ranked 22nd in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll as of Jan. 21. The Orangewomen's second loss was to #3/2 Connecticut. Temple also defeated Bowling Green on Nov. 28, a team that handed #17/16 Dayton its only loss so far by a wide margin, 65-40.
LOSS AT HOWARD A GAME OF CONTRADICTIONS
Temple's recent 61-58 loss at Howard on Jan. 4 was a tough one, as the Owls held a lead of as many as 17 points with just over 13 minutes remaining. Temple shot a season-best 59.1 percent from the field in the first half (13-of-22), but a season-worst 25 percent in the second half (6-of-24). The Owls' 36 first-half points were a season-high, as was their eight-point halftime lead.
SECOND-HALF SURGE
In 11 of Temple's 17 games so far this season, the Owls have scored more points in the second half than in the first. In those 11 games, the Owls have scored 248 first-half points compared to 365 second-half points. They won the only game in which they were tied at halftime (vs. Montana). While a big second half was not enough to overcome deficits in many of those games, it was more than enough against Syracuse as the Owls outscored the Orange 49-28 in the second half to erase a 14-point halftime deficit. Temple also used a big second half to beat St. Bonaventure after trailing by seven with six minutes remaining, closing out the game on a 19-4 run.
COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AT MICHIGAN STATE
After trailing by as many as 15 points to Michigan St. on Dec. 29, the Owls made a run down the stretch to narrow the gap to as few as six after an 8-0 run. Meghan Roxas came up huge off the bench, hitting three shots from behind the arc for a career-high nine points. Her final trey with two minutes remaining turned out to be the last bucket for Temple, while the Spartans went 4-of-4 at the line in the final minute to hold off the Owls.
TURNING OVER POINTS
The Owls have struggled to handle the ball so far this season, and their opponents have taken advantage. Temple's opponents have scored 335 points off turnovers (an average of 19.7 per game) while the Owls have averaged just 13 ppg off opponent turnovers (222 total). After committing more than 20 turnovers just four times in all of the 2011-12 season, the Owls have now done so in nine of 17 games in the 2012-13 season.
ORANGE SQUEEZED BY OWLS
After erasing a 14-point, 39-25 halftime deficit, the Owls handed Syracuse its first loss of the season on Dec. 2. Temple scored 49 points in the second half on 58% shooting, and led by as many as eight in the final minutes. Four players scored in double figures, led by Victoria Macaulay with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Rateska Brown, later named the A-10 co-Player of the Week, scored 19 points off the bench, and Tyonna Williams notched her first career double-double with 14 points to go with a career-high 11 assists. The fourth double-digit scorer was Natasha Thames with 10.
