Zaniewski's Resiliency Earns Her ECAC Coaches' Choice Award
1.22.13 | Women's Gymnastics
PHILADELPHIA—For the second straight week, a Temple women's gymnast has been recognized by the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference with the weekly Coaches' Choice Award. A week after sophomore Taylor Rakus was honored with the award, junior Heather Zaniewski has now been tabbed with the recognition for the week of Jan. 21.
In Saturday's quad meet at the University of Pittsburgh, where Temple went up against perennial power squads in Maryland, host Pitt and Cornell, Zaniewski demonstrated why she was selected as the captain for the 2013 Temple Owls.
Taking part on the balanced beam, Zaniewski smashed her foot on the apparatus when she fell off during her opening routine.
Knowing her injury could negatively affect the team in the vault event, where she was expected to compete next, Zaniewski told head coach Aaron Murphy that she wasn't able to perform to her ability, so she was scratched from the lineup.
Later in the evening when Temple was in need of every point it could get, Murphy asked Zaniewski if she would be able to go back out and hit her routine on bars.
Complying with Murphy, the Owls' captain stepped up in a desperate time of need and took part in the event.
Returning to action, Zaniewski showed no signs of being affected by her earlier sustained injury and gave an impressive performance on bars. Zaniewski was awarded a score of 9.550, which was the highest mark for a Temple performer in the event.
Zaniewski and the Owls will be back in action on Saturday when the head to New Hampshire for a 4:00 p.m. meet.
