PHILADELPHIA - Temple will play its second Philadelphia Big 5 game of the week when the Owls host La Salle at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27 in McGonigle Hall. Unlike the Penn game, this will also count toward the Atlantic 10 standings. Temple is 8-10 overall, 1-2 in the A-10 and 1-1 in the Big 5, while La Salle is 5-13 overall, 1-2 in the A-10 and 0-2 in the Big 5.

Immediately following Sunday's game will be Parent-Child Layup Day. All kids in attendance will be able to come onto the court to make a basket.

THE OPENING TIP
•Temple played its final non-conference game of the regular season on Jan. 23, defeating Penn 59-51...The Owls' lead of 24 was enough to hold off a late rally by the Quakers and snap a two-game losing streak.
•The Owls recently lost back-to-back Atlantic 10 games for the first time since the 2002-03 season, narrowly losing 53-51 to VCU on Jan. 16 before being outmatched at Duquesne in a 64-45 loss on Jan. 20.
•La Salle is winless in the Philadelphia Big 5 so far at 0-2 while Temple is 1-1...Villanova has already clinched the city title with a perfect 4-0 record.
•Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza got the 100th win of her career in the Owls' 67-59 win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13...The milestone came in Temple's A-10 opener, and against the only team to defeat the Owls in the A-10 regular season last year.
•Cardoza is now 101-48, and reached her 100th win four games sooner than her predecessor Dawn Staley, who had 50 losses  before reaching 100 wins.
•Sophomore Rateska Brown scored a career-high 22 points including a career-high six three-pointers in the VCU game...She followed it up with a team-high 15 points at Duquesne.
•Senior Victoria Macaulay notched her seventh double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds at St. Bonaventure...Macaulay led all players with 15 points and nine rebounds in the Jan. 23 win at Penn.
•Five of Temple's losses this season were to teams with strong records, Duquesne (14-3), Georgetown (9-4), Michigan State (12-1), Villanova (9-1) and Auburn (8-2).
•Temple was the only team to defeat Syracuse during its non-conference season, back on Dec. 2...The Orangewomen are now 16-2 and ranked 22nd in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll...Their only other loss came to #3/2 Connecticut.
•Turnovers have been costly for the Owls for much of the season...They have committed over 20 of them in 10 of 18 games...In the 2011-12 season, Temple committed more than 20 turnovers a total of just four times.
•Temple has six freshmen on a roster of 11, making the Owls the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season (San Jose State is in the top spot).
•La Salle is 5-13 overall and 1-2 in the Atlantic 10...The Explorers have lost four of their last five.

SCOUTING LA SALLE
The Explorers are 5-13 overall, 1-2 in the Atlantic 10 and 0-2 in the Big 5. They have lost four of their last five, with the lone win coming against Rhode Island, 72-46. Last week, La Salle suffered losses to Dayton (95-47) and Butler (59-42). Senior Brittany Wilson leads the Explorers with 18.2 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per game.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST LA SALLE
Temple and La Salle are tied 20-20 in the all-time series, but the Owls have dominated since 2001, winning all 14 meetings. Last year Temple won 71-44 on the road, and the year before the Owls won 72-63 at home. The last win for the Explorers was back in 2000 on Temple's home court, 72-63.

BROWN BREAKS OUT
Sophomore Rateska Brown was the Owls' leading scorer in back-to-back games vs. VCU and Duquesne, leading Temple in scoring for the first two times this season. She scored a career-high 22 points including a career-high six three-pointers vs. VCU on Jan. 16, and followed it up with a team-high 15 points at Duquesne on Jan. 20. She also recorded a career-high six steals against VCU, and averaged 6.0 rebounds per game in the two contests.

VILLANOVA CLAIMS BIG 5 TITLE
The Big 5 title was claimed already this season by Villanova who, for a second year in a row, went a perfect 4-0 in the city series. Temple is currently 1-1 with a loss to Villanova on Dec. 21 and a win over Penn on Jan. 23. Last year, the Owls finished alone in second place with a record of 3-1. The 2010-11 Big 5 title was Temple's alone as the Owls edged Saint Joseph's 52-49 on Feb. 23, completing a 4-0 sweep. The previous year was the first in six seasons that Temple had NOT won or shared the title, and this year now marks the third time that has happened in the last nine years. In 2010-11, the title was Temple's ninth overall and eighth outright since the Philadelphia Big 5 tradition was established for women's basketball in 1979-80.

SWEET REVENGE
The only blemish on Temple's A-10 slate last season was a loss to St. Bonaventure, and the Owls have now already avenged that defeat with a win over the Bonnies in this year's A-10 opener. The 67-59 win was not an easy one, as Temple trailed by seven with six minutes left. The Owls closed the game on an impressive, 19-4 run to come away victorious and give head coach Tonya Cardoza the 100th win of her career.

COLD SPELL LEADS TO FIRST A-10 LOSS
In a game that had been close most of the way, an eight-minute scoreless stretch for the Owls in the second half against VCU proved too much to overcome. In the final minutes Temple cut an 11-point deficit to two after a 13-4 run, but could not tie the game despite having 17 seconds to do so on its final possession. The Owls shot a season-worst 28.6 percent from the field (20-of-70), and had only one player reach double figures as Rateska Brown scored a career-high 22 points.

CARDOZA WINS THE 100TH GAME OF HER CAREER
Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza got the 100th win of her career in the Owls' 67-59 win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13. The milestone came in Temple's A-10 opener, which was against the only team to defeat the Owls in the A-10 regular season last year. Cardoza is now 101-48, and reached her 100th win four games sooner than her predecessor Dawn Staley, who had 50 losses before reaching 100 wins.

LEARNING NOT TO LET GO
After struggling mightily with their ball-handling for much of the non-conference season, the Owls recorded fewer turnovers for three straight games than in any game before. They committed just 12 in the win vs. Western Michigan on Jan. 7, and then a season-low 10 in the win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13. Against VCU on Jan. 16, the Owls had 13 turnovers. The three games were the first three in which Temple recorded fewer turnovers than its opponent. The Owls stumbled in a loss at Duquesne, committing 25 turnovers, and did not fare much better despite a win at Penn, committing 23 turnovers.

TRENDING
Some trends have emerged after Temple's first 18 games of the season. The most noticeable trends including the Owls being 8-3 when out-rebounding opponents, going 0-6 when being out-rebounded, going 6-2 when their starters outscore the opponents' starters, and going 4-0 when scoring 65 or more points.

MACAULAY TAKING CHARGE
Along with leading the team in a number of categories on the stat sheet, senior center Victoria Macaulay ranks high among all Atlantic 10 players in five areas. She is averaging 14.4 ppg (7th), 9.0 rpg (5th), has a  field-goal percentage of 50.0 (4th), has 2.1 blocks per game (3rd) and 7.0 def. rpg (2nd).

Her scoring numbers are particularly impressive when compared to the rest of her career. She averaged 3.0 ppg as a freshman, 4.6 ppg as a sophomore and 9.7 ppg as a junior.
