Owls' Men's Tennis Wins Spring Opener Against St. Francis (N.Y.), 4-0

PHILADELPHIA – Temple's men's tennis team was in action for the first time this spring, taking on St. Francis (N.Y.) on Friday evening, January 25, 2013. The Owls defeated the visiting Friars, 4-0, in a match that was held at the Upper Dublin Sports Club in Ambler, Pa.
The match got started with doubles play, and the Cherry & White quickly took a 1-0 lead with wins at the second and third flights. Newcomers Santiago Canete Riaza and Sam Rundle paired up at number two to defeat Ricardo Garcia and Francesc Terns-Campius, 8-1. Freshman Nicolas Paulus and sophomore Hernan Vasconez secured the point with their 8-1 defeat of James Chung and Evan Vrsaljko at number three.
Vasconez continued his success, making it a 2-0 match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Chung at the sixth singles flight. Paulus followed suit with his win at number four, defeating Vrsaljko 6-1, 6-1. Canete Riaza secured the match with his 6-1, 6-1 win against Martin Grunin.
The remainder of the matches did not finish since the match was decided in Temple's favor, 4-0.
The Owls are 1-0 and will return to action next Saturday, February 2, with an 8 a.m. match against Atlantic 10 foe Richmond at Legacy Tennis and Youth Education Center.
