PHILADELPHIA – Four players scored in double figures for Temple women's basketball in a 61-48 win over Richmond (12-10, 2-4) in Atlantic 10 action on Thursday night at McGonigle Hall. Tyonna Williams scored a game-high 17 points while dishing a game-high six assists to lead the Owls (9-11, 2-3).

Temple got 12 points apiece from Sally Kabengano, Victoria Macaulay and Rateska Brown. Macaulay and Kabengano added nine rebounds apiece, while Macaulay also blocked four shots. Brown hit 4-of-8 from behind the arc and Williams hit 3-of-5 treys and 4-of-4 at the line.

“I felt like that was a well-needed win,” said Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza, “playing a team like Richmond who's really good offensively and makes you be really committed on the defensive end. I felt like we set the tone early. We limited them to 18 points in the first half and I felt like our guys did a really good job of sticking to the game plan and how to guard them. It's a game that we really needed for our psyches, and I'm happy to get the win.”

Becca Wann led the Spiders with 15 points off the bench, while Kristina King recorded a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Richmond nearly did not hit a three-pointer for the first time all season, but Rachael Bilney finally drained one with three seconds remaining as Richmond finished 1-for-15 from behind the arc. The Spiders fared much better at the free throw line, going a perfect 17-for-17.

The Owls got off to a hot start, forcing five Richmond turnovers in the first eight possessions. Six of Temple's early points came off turnovers as the Owls jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first five minutes.

Temple held the Spiders without a field goal for over five minutes to start the game, and the Owls had their first double-digit lead at 13:21 after a three-pointer by Brown made it 15-4.

Richmond's King scored six points of a 10-4 Richmond run that narrowed Temple's lead to five, 19-14 with 4:52 left in the first half. Neither team scored for the next couple minutes of action, but a flurry of buckets in the final two minutes made up for the drought.

Brown and Williams both hit treys in a 10-4 run over the final 2:24 to give the Owls a 29-18 lead at halftime. Temple finished the first half with 15 points off turnovers, compared to six for the Spiders.

Macaulay led the Owls with eight points in the first half, while Kabengano had six points along with five boards.

Much like the first half, the Owls held Richmond without a field goal for just over five minutes as they used an 8-0 to take their first 20-point lead of the game, 38-18 at 17:22.

The lead remained around 20 until the Spiders began to make a run, starting near the 13-minute mark. The Owls were scoreless for six full minutes, and their only bucket came during an 11-2 run that got Richmond within 12, 47-35 with six minutes remaining.

The Spiders matched that 12-point margin once more, but came no closer. Brown and Williams each hit another three-pointer over a one-minute span to get Temple's lead back to 16 with four minutes to go, and the Owls led by at least 14 the rest of the way.

While the turnover differential was only 21-17 in favor of Richmond at the end of the game, the Owls took full advantage to finish with a 26-8 edge in points off turnovers.

The Owls will be on the road for their next game, a 2:00 p.m. contest at Massachusetts on Sunday, Feb. 3.
