PHILADELPHIA - After a convincing win over Richmond on Thursday, Temple women's basketball will have just two full days to prepare for the next game at Massachusetts, set for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3. The Owls (9-11, 2-3) have taken the last three meetings against the Minutewomen (3-18, 1-5).
THE OPENING TIP
•The Owls had four players score in double figures in a 61-48 win vs. Richmond on Thursday, led by sophomore Tyonna Williams with 17 points...She also dished a game-high six assists.
•Temple currently ranks third among all teams in NCAA Division I in three-point field goal defense at 23.9 percent.
•Prior to the victory over the Spiders, Temple had a rough go of it in A-10 games since winning its conference opener at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13...The Owls lost three straight league games, ending with a 71-55 loss to La Salle on Jan. 27.
•The loss to La Salle was the first since 2000 for the Owls, who had beaten the Explorers 14 times in a row prior to this year.
•Temple played its final non-conference game of the regular season on Jan. 23, defeating Penn 59-51...The Owls' lead of 24 was enough to hold off a late rally by the Quakers and snap a two-game losing streak.
•Before this year, the Owls had not lost back-to-back Atlantic 10 games since the 2002-03 season.
•Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza got the 100th win of her career in the Owls' 67-59 win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13...The milestone came in Temple's A-10 opener, and against the only team to defeat the Owls in the A-10 regular season last year.
•Cardoza is now 102-49, and reached her 100th win four games sooner than her predecessor Dawn Staley, who had 50 losses before reaching 100 wins.
•Senior Victoria Macaulay recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 19 points and 15 rebounds vs. La Salle.
•Five of Temple's losses this season were to teams with strong records and strong RPI's, Duquesne (14-3), Georgetown (9-4), Michigan State (12-1), Villanova (9-1) and Auburn (8-2).
•Temple was the only team to defeat Syracuse during its non-conference season, back on Dec. 2...The Orangewomen are now 17-3 and ranked 24th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll...Their only other losses came to #3/2 Connecticut and Villanova.
•Turnovers have been costly for the Owls for much of the season...They have committed over 20 of them in 11 of 20 games...In the 2011-12 season, Temple committed more than 20 turnovers a total of just four times.
•Temple has six freshmen on a roster of 11, making the Owls the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season (San Jose State is in the top spot).
•UMass is 3-18 overall and 1-5 in the A-10...The Minutewomen have lost five in a row since defeating George Washington, 62-58 in their A-10 opener on Jan. 12...Senior center Jasmine Watson leads the Minutewomen with 12.2 ppg.
SCOUTING MASSACHUSETTS
UMass is 3-18 overall and 1-5 in the Atlantic 10. The Minutewomen have lost five in a row since defeating George Washington, 62-58 in their A-10 opener on Jan. 12. Most recently, UMass suffered a 68-57 loss to La Salle at home earlier this week. Senior center Jasmine Watson leads the Minutewomen with 12.2 ppg, while freshman forward Rashida Timbilla leads the team with 8.3 rpg.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST MASSACHUSETTS
Temple is 30-19 all-time against Massachusetts, and the Owls have won 11 of the last 12. The lone loss came in 2009 when the Minutewomen took a 71-60 win in Amherst. Temple has since won three in a row, including a 76-48 win on the road two years ago and a 77-50 win at home last season.
DOWNTOWN DEFENDERS
After being stingy on three-point defense all season, the Owls took it to a new level when they held Richmond to a single trey in 15 attempts. Temple is now ranked third among all teams in NCAA Division I in three-point field goal defense at 23.9 percent.
ACCEPTING CHARITY
Sophomore Tyonna Williams is shooting 73.8 percent from the free throw line this season, but has hit them at a 94 percent clip over Temple's last four games. She has missed only one free throw in that stretch, going 17-of-18.
STARTERS GET IT DONE
Temple's bench had been key for a stretch of recent games, but in the 61-48 win vs. Richmond on Jan. 31, it was the starters' time to shine once again. All but two points were scored by the Owls' five starters, and four of them finished in double figures. Tyonna Williams led the way with 17 points, while Sally Kabengano, Rateska Brown and Victoria Macaulay scored 12 points apiece. Kabengano and Macaulay led the team with nine rebounds each. The five starters also accounted for 37 of 40 rebounds, eight of nine steals and all 16 assists.
HISTORY NOT REPEATING
After defeating the La Salle Explorers 14 straight times dating back to the 1999-2000 season, the Owls could not keep the streak alive as they suffered a 71-55 loss to La Salle at home this past Sunday. Little went right for Temple throughout the game, and 27 turnovers led to a 28-8 edge for La Salle in points off turnovers. The Owls ran into an unstoppable force in La Salle's Shanel Harrison, who scored a career-high 29 points and came one shy of her program's record with eight steals.
THE RISE OF ROXAS
Through the first seven games of the season, freshman Meghan Roxas played just 4.1 minutes per game and averaged less than one point per game. She got her first big break with a start and 20 minutes of action at Kent State, and has been on the rise ever since. Over the last 11 games she has played in, she has averaged 18.5 minutes per game, 5.5 points per game, and has hit 14-of-40 from behind the arc (.350).
CARDOZA WINS THE 100TH GAME OF HER CAREER
Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza got the 100th win of her career in the Owls' 67-59 win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13. The milestone came in Temple's A-10 opener, which was against the only team to defeat the Owls in the A-10 regular season last year. Cardoza is now 102-49, and reached her 100th win four games sooner than her predecessor Dawn Staley, who had 50 losses before reaching 100 wins.
BROWN BREAKS OUT
Sophomore Rateska Brown was the Owls' leading scorer in back-to-back games vs. VCU and Duquesne, leading Temple in scoring for the first two times this season. She scored a career-high 22 points including a career-high six three-pointers vs. VCU on Jan. 16, and followed it up with a team-high 15 points at Duquesne on Jan. 20. She also recorded a career-high six steals against VCU, and averaged 6.0 rebounds per game in the two contests.
SWEET REVENGE
The only blemish on Temple's A-10 slate last season was a loss to St. Bonaventure, and the Owls avenged that defeat with a win over the Bonnies in this year's A-10 opener. The 67-59 win was not an easy one, as Temple trailed by seven with six minutes left. The Owls closed the game on an impressive, 19-4 run to come away victorious and give head coach Tonya Cardoza the 100th win of her career.
MACAULAY TAKING CHARGE
Along with leading the team in a number of categories on the stat sheet, senior center Victoria Macaulay ranks high among all Atlantic 10 players in five areas. She is averaging 14.6 ppg (5th), 9.3 rpg (5th), has a field-goal percentage of 47.7 (6th), has 2.2 blocks per game (3rd) and 7.1 def. rpg (2nd).
Her scoring numbers are particularly impressive when compared to the rest of her career. She averaged 3.0 ppg as a freshman, 4.6 ppg as a sophomore and 9.7 ppg as a junior.
