UConn Picked to Take League Title; Owls Picked Ninth

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Defending national champion Connecticut is the unanimous favorite to win the 2014 American Athletic Conference women's basketball title, according the league's 10 head coaches, the Conference announced during its inaugural Women's Basketball Media Day at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Monday.
National runner-up Louisville was selected second by the coaches who were not allowed to vote for their own teams. The Temple Owls, under the guidance of sixth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza, were picked ninth. Cardoza, as well as seniors Natasha Thames (Port Huron, Mich.) and Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.), participated in the day's events.
USF was picked third, followed by Rutgers, SMU, Memphis, Cincinnati, and UCF. Houston was tenth.
Additionally, the American announced the coaches' preseason All-Conference selections, Player of the Year, and Freshman of the Year candidates.
Mohegan Sun Arena will host the 2014 American Women's Basketball Championship on March 7-10. Home to the WNBA's Connecticut Sun, the 10,000-seat, state-of-the-art Mohegan Sun Arena opened in November of 2002, and is now internationally recognized as a premier facility. The winner of the conference tournament earns an automatic berth into the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
Temple opens the 2013-14 season at cross-town rival La Salle on Nov. 8 in Philadelphia Big 5 action. The Owls' home opener is slated for Nov. 16 with Auburn at 6 p.m. in McGonigle Hall.
