News & Notes Following Temple's 33-14 win vs. Army
Matt Rhule recorded his first win as a head coach.
Jalen Fitzpatrick caught a 45 yard pass from QB P.J. Walker to set up the first TD. It was the longest reception of Fitzpatrick's career. His 37-yd TD on the second score became the second longest reception of his career. He finished with 4 catches for 128 yards and one TD. It was Fitzpatrick's first career 100-yard receiving game. The last Owl to accomplish that feat was Michael Campbell (11-132-2TDs) vs. Ohio on 11/16/10.
By taking the opening drive for a TD, the Owls scored first for the first time this season. The last time they scored on the opening drive was a FG vs. Syracuse in the 2012 season finale. The last opening drive TD was at Army on 11/17/12 (RB Matt Brown).
While building a 26-0 halftime lead, the Owls held their opponent scoreless in the first quarter for the first time this season. The last time the Owls posted a shutout in the first half was vs. Rutgers on 10/20/12. TU held a 10-0 halftime lead but lost that game 35-10.
Army invaded Temple territory on their first two drives (to the 43 and 49). They then failed to cross midfield for 7 consecutive drives.
Temple outgained Army 361 yards to 338 despite 17 fewer plays (77-60). The Owls averaged 6.0 per play to Army's 4.4.
TU started 7 sophomores on defense (Shahbaz Ahmed, Matt Ioannidis, Hershey Walton, Brandon Chudnoff, Tyler Matakevich, Nate D. Smith, Tavon Young) and two true freshmen(Sharif Finch, Jahaad Pretlow) to go with one junior (Anthony Robey) and one senior (Abdul Smith).
When MLB Nate D. Smith picked up a fumble and advanced it 19 yards for a score, it was the Owls first defensive TD since 10/16/10 vs. Bowling Green – LB Quinten White recovered a fumble in the end zone.
Both Matakevich and Young recorded INTs – the first two by the Owls this season. For the first time this season Temple won the turnover/takeaway battle. TU had two fumble recoveries to go with its 2 INTs, while Army registered just one INT.
Matakevich led all Owls with 13 tackles (all solos). He now has 10+ tackles in 6 of 7 games.
RB Zaire Williams carried 19 times for 94 yards and a TD. The 19 carries are the best mark by an Owls RB this season.
K Tyler Mayes and OL Jacob Quinn saw their first career action.
