News & Notes Following Temple's 59-49 loss at SMU
The 108 combined points were the most since an 82-28 win vs. Bucknell on 10/8/66. Interestingly, none of the combined 15 TDs came on defense or special teams.
The 593 total yards of offense by Temple was 29 yards shy of the school record of 622 set vs. Southern Illinois in 1974.
WR Robby Anderson took a short hitch pass and turned it into a 42-yard TD for the first score of his career. The Owls have now gone three straight games (all QB P.J. Walker starts) with at least one 35-yard TD (they had one total in the first 5 games). Anderson topped the 100-yard receiving mark by the second series. Last week WR Jalen Fitzpatrick became the first TU receiver to top the century mark since Michael Campbell on 11/16/10 (131 yards). The last time Temple had receivers reach that mark in back-to-back games was when Campbell did it twice (11/6/10 and 11/16/10). Anderson finished with a school record 239 receiving yards moving ahead of Van Johnson's 214 vs. Pittsburgh in 1996.
Fitzpatrick, a QB in high school, took an end around and connected 83-yards for a TD to Anderson. It was Fitzpatrick's first college pas attempt. It also, was the third longest pass play in school history and longest since 1996 (Henry Burris to Van Johnson 87t vs. Pittsburgh).
WR John Christopher had an 18-yard TD reception. It's his second straight game with a TD. Fitzpatrick entered the game with 3 straight games with TD catches. Prior to these streaks the last time an Owl had back-to-back games with a TD reception was Alex Jackson (10/30/10-11/6/10).
QB P.J. Walker opened the game with 16 straight completions. By that time (midway through the 2nd Q) he hit 7 different receivers for 168 yards and 3 TDs. He now has 9 TD passes in just 5 games this season (3 starts) – the most in qa season by an Owls' QB since Mike Gerardi's 10 in 2010.
Five different players scored (Anderson, Ryan Alderman, Christopher, Walker, Kenneth Harper). Last week five different players scored (Harper, Zaire Williams, Christopher, Fitzpatrick, Nate D. Smith). That's 8 different scorers in two weeks.
RB Zaire Williams set up a Walker TD (6-yard rush) with a 50-yard burst down the sidelines. It was the longest rush for the Owls this season. With a team-leading 427 rushing yards, he is now 31 yards shy of 4th place on the Owls freshman rushing list.
CB Anthony Robey and WLB Tyler Matakevich and SS Tavon Young each had a fumble recovery (forced by DE Shahbaz Ahmed, DT Hershey Walton, and MLB Nate D. Smith, respectively). It was the second time this season and second straight week that Temple won the takeaway battle (+3).
Jacob Quinn made his first career start (at RG).
