PHILADELPHIA – As Temple's student-athletes gathered for another Sunday evening (Nov. 10)  installment of the Owls Striving for Excellence speaker series, they were joined by basketball great, Rick Barry, who offered advice regarding entitlement, achieving your goals and much more.

Beginning as a successful NCAA basketball player for the University of Miami and moving on to become a record-holding professional, one of Barry's strongest pieces of advice was setting the highest of goals for oneself despite odds that may not be so much in one's favor, especially in the world of sports.

Although Barry played professional basketball, he explained to the Temple student-athletes that he felt he has never "worked" a day in his life. With this, he said it is critical to find something in life you have a true love and passion for in order to live a life free of "work."

Finding this passion is not the only step to success, Barry said. Learning how to stay fully focused during these years, in the classroom and in the sports arena, will be one of the key tools to reaching one's full potential and becoming successful in any endeavor.

As the conversation moved forward, and the idea of entitlement within athletes was addressed, Barry explained that he, nor any of his teammates, ever felt a sense of entitlement that had an effect on how they played or trained.

He explained that ever since his younger years, he was taught that the only thing one should be entitled to is what you earn. Rather than feel entitled, Barry said, student-athletes or professional athletes should constantly be striving to better themselves without fear of failure.

Once the floor was opened for questions, Barry addressed topics such as the differences between coaching and playing, preferred coaching styles, the transition from professional sports to a career in broadcasting, and developing strong team chemistry.

Upon closing, Barry left the Owls with one major piece of advice, which he attributed much of his success to. The idea of confidence is what athletes must carry with them constantly, with confidence in oneself and one's skills, pressure will be banned and success will always be within reach.
