Temple Women’s Basketball Defeats West Chester, 116-59

11.2.13 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – With the season opener less than a week away, the Temple women's basketball team sharpened its skills on Saturday afternoon with a 116-59 win over West Chester in exhibition action at McGonigle Hall.

Six players netted double-figure scoring, including the five starters. Freshman guard Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) led the Owls with 23 points and seven assists, while sophomore guard Erica Covile (Canton, Mich.) added 19 points. Seniors Natasha Thames (Port Huron, Mich.) and Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.) each recorded double-doubles.  Thames finished with 17 points and 12 boards, while Shipp had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

"I definitely think we ran and got some easy buckets," said sixth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza.  "But I just wish we had done a little bit better on the defensive end."

Kendall Benovy led the Golden Rams with 13 points.  Keisha Steele-Hook added 10 points off the bench.

Temple opens the season at cross-town rival La Salle on Nov. 8. The home opener at McGonigle Hall is slated for Nov. 16 with Auburn at 6 p.m.
