PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's basketball picked up a 25-point win over Howard, 83-58, on Thursday night at McGonigle Hall.
The Owls improved to 6-3 overall, while the Bison fell to 3-7.
"I'm happy that we won the game," said sixth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza. "But I'm not happy with how we won."
In the first half, Temple went on a 15-0 run to go ahead, 19-5. The Owls, powered by double-digit performances by seniors Natasha Thames (Port Huron, Mich.) and Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.), built their lead to as many as 23 points, 38-15, with 5:45 to go in the stanza. The Bison held TU to just nine points over the last five minutes, closing the gap to 14 points, 49-35, at halftime.
"I felt we went to (the seniors) early," Cardoza said. "Natasha established a post presence that I haven't seen in a while."
In the second half, Temple forced its way to a 20-point lead 10 minutes left in the game and never looked back.
Thames and Shipp both finished with career highs, netting double figures in the first half. Thames scored a game-high 24 points, and Shipp had 22 points. Sophomore Erica Covile (Detroit, Mich.) chipped in 11 points.
"We want to play great basketball," Carodza said. "I'm usually not happy. We gave up 35 points in the first half. It was a lack of discipline on our part. We were lucky to score in the post early."
Tre'Shya Heslip led Howard with a double-double of sorts. She had 23 points and 13 turnovers. Victoria Gonzalez was the only other Bison player in double figures with 17 points.
Overall, Temple out-rebounded Howard, 41-28. The Owls shot 50 percent from the field (31-62), including 60 percent in the first half, while holding HU to 37 percent (22-57).
Temple hosts Villanova (8-1) in Philadelphia Big 5 action on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. at McGonigle Hall. Santa Claus will be in attendance and will be available for photos when doors open at 1 p.m.
