PHILADELPHIA - The opening meet of the 2013-14 Temple indoor track and field season will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7 as the Owls travel to the nearby Jack Pyrah Invitational. Villanova is the host of the annual meet, which is held at the Haverford College Indoor Facility.
Sixth-year head coach Eric Mobley is leading his team into its first season as a member of the newly-created American Athletic Conference, and says this early meet is a good test for Temple.
"The Jack Pyrah Invitational is one of those meets where we just try to see where our fall training is," said Mobley, "and what things we need to work on when we come back from our break. Going from September to December, the kids kind of get antsy and you want to see where you stand. That's why we have these early season meets."
It will be just over a month later that Temple will travel to its second meet of the indoor season, the Rutgers Invitational on Jan. 10-11.
This Saturday, the meet opens with the field events at 11:00 a.m., while the running events start at noon. Many of the Owls' field event competitors will be seeing their first collegiate action, with four freshmen set to compete.
Veteran leadership in the field events will come from junior Kiersten LaRoche and sophomore Imani Shell in the long jump, but Shell will be competing for the first time as an Owl after transferring from Cal University of Pennsylvania. Sophomore pole vaulter Rachel Szeto rounds out the returning women's field competitors.
On the men's side, sophomore Jamal Williams will compete in the long jump, while junior Justin Berg and sophomore Kyle Davis will compete in the weight throw.
The running events start with the women's 5000m, which will feature a Temple pair who have been racing all fall with the cross country team. Jenna Dubrow and Anna Pavone led the Owls in every race over the past few months, and now transition over to indoor track.
The day will conclude with the women's 4x400m relay and the men's 4x400m relay. Temple will field one women's team, and end the meet with two men's teams in the final relay.
