Game Notes l Live Stats

PHILADELPHIA - The 74th all-time meeting between Temple women's basketball and Saint Joseph's will take place at SJU's Hagan Arena on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 2:00 p.m. The game will air live on the CBS Sports Network as the two teams battle it out for the final time as Atlantic 10 opponents in the regular season.

The Owls (12-12, 5-4) have won four of their last five including two straight, while the Hawks (18-7, 8-1) recently had an eight-game win streak snapped by Charlotte. Saint Joseph's rebounded from that loss with a 69-68 overtime win over Duquesne on Feb. 13, a team that was previously undefeated in conference play.

THE OPENING TIP
•Temple has now matched its most successful streak of the season, having won four of its last five including the last two straight.
•Earlier this week, the Owls defeated Rhode Island at home, 56-45...Three players scored in double figures, led by Sally Kabengano with 14 points, and Victoria Macaulay with her 10th double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
•Temple and Saint Joseph's are meeting for the 74th time in program history, and although the Hawks lead the all-time series 39-34, the Owls have won the last 13 straight.
•The 2012-13 Philadelphia Big 5 title has already been claimed by Villanova with a record of 4-0.
•The Owls' other recent win was a close one vs. Saint Louis, 54-50 on Feb. 10...The game saw eight ties and 10 lead changes, but the Owls got big performances from all five starters to hold off the Billikens.
•Temple currently ranks third among all teams in NCAA Division I in three-point field goal defense at 23.6 percent.
•Macaulay blocked a career-high nine shots in the win over Saint Louis, coming just two shy of the program record...She has had at least six blocks in three of the last four games, and currently ranks 13th in the nation with 2.65 blocks per game.
•Before this year, the Owls had not lost back-to-back Atlantic 10 games since the 2002-03 season...The four conference losses are now the most since Temple went 12-4 in the A-10 in 2005-06.
•Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza got the 100th win of her career in the Owls' 67-59 win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13...The milestone came in Temple's A-10 opener, and against the only team to defeat the Owls in the A-10 regular season last year.
•Macaulay recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds vs. Rhode Island on Feb. 13.
•Six of Temple's losses this season were to teams with strong records and strong RPI's, Charlotte (17-4), Duquesne (14-3), Georgetown (9-4), Michigan State (12-1), Villanova (9-1) and Auburn (8-2).
•Temple was the only team to defeat Syracuse during its non-conference season, back on Dec. 2...The Orangewomen are now 20-3 and ranked 23rd in the AP Poll Poll...Their only other losses came to #3/2 Connecticut and Villanova.
•Temple has six freshmen on a roster of 11, making the Owls the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season (San Jose State is in the top spot).
•Saint Joseph's is 17-6 overall and 8-1 in the Atlantic 10...The Hawks are coming off a big, 69-68 overtime win vs. Duquesne earlier this week...SJU made a splash early in the season with a 50-49 win vs. #5 Maryland.

SCOUTING SAINT JOSEPH'S
Saint Joseph's is having a very successful season at 17-6 overall and 8-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Hawks are coming off a big, 69-68 overtime win vs. Duquesne earlier this week, rebounding from their only conference loss in the game before (71-66 vs. Charlotte). The Hawks made a splash early in the season with a 50-49 win vs. #5 Maryland in their third game, and recently won eight straight contests before the loss to Charlotte. Senior forward Chatilla van Grinsven is averging a double-double of 15.0 ppg and 10.1 rpg to lead Saint Joseph's.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST SAINT JOSEPH'S
Temple and Saint Joseph's are meeting for the 74th time since the city rivals began playing each other in 1938. Although Saint Joseph's leads the all-time series 39-34, the Owls have won 19 of the last 20 including the last 13 straight. Many of the recent games have proven very competitive, with Temple winning the last five by an average of just 7.6 points. Last year the Owls won both at home and on the road by 10, 75-65 at home on Feb. 22 and 80-70 at SJU on Feb. 1. Two years ago, Temple won 53-43 at home before edging the Hawks 52-49 on the road to clinch the Big 5 Championship.

W'S ADDING UP
For just the second time this season, the Owls have won four of their last five games and are now back to .500 with a record of 12-12. In Temple's most recent win against Rhode Island the Owls were actually out-shot and out-rebounded, but can contribute their success to a season-low nine turnovers as well as a 15-of-19 performance at the free throw line.

DOWNTOWN DEFENDERS
After being stingy on three-point defense all season, the Owls have recently taken it to a new level. They held Richmond to a single trey in 15 attempts on Jan. 31, held UMass to 3-of-18 (16.7%) from behind the arc on Feb. 3, and held Charlotte to 2-of-10 shooting (20%) from three-point range on Feb. 6. Temple is ranked third in NCAA DI in three-point field goal defense at 23.6%.

STARTERS GET IT DONE
Temple's bench had been key for a stretch of games, but in the last five games, four of them wins, it has been the starters' time to shine. All but 11 points (out of 280) have been scored by the Owls' five starters in the last five games combined. Four of them finished in double figures in wins vs. Richmond on Jan. 31 and Saint Louis on Feb. 10, and three did so in a win at UMass on Feb. 3 and a win vs. Rhode Island on Feb. 13. Highlights of those performances have included Tyonna Williams scoring a career-high 23 points at UMass, and Victoria Macaulay leading the Owls with 15 at Charlotte and 16 vs. Saint Louis. The five starters have also accounted for 184 of 196 rebounds, 36 of 40 steals and 68 of 70 assists.

TRICK SHOT MAKES LOCAL NEWS IN PHILLY
After practice on Feb. 12, four members of the women's basketball staff lined up and made simultaneous buckets from the free throw line to near half court. The video has been a hit on social media, and was even shown on the 6:00 p.m. local news on CBS3 in Philadelphia. The CBS clip can be viewed HERE.

PLAY 4KAY
On Wednesday, Feb. 20, Temple will host Xavier in its annual Play 4Kay game. The team is joining the fight against breast cancer by raising money to support the Play 4Kay Foundation, and the Owls are asking for donations to be made to their fundrasing website at: play4kay.org/templeowls. Play 4Kay is an opportunity for a nation of coaches to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The official charity is the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in partnership with The V Foundation and Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

MACAULAY TAKING CHARGE
Along with leading the team in a number of categories on the stat sheet, senior center Victoria Macaulay ranks high among all Atlantic 10 players in five areas. She is averaging 14.5 ppg (6th), 9.0 rpg (5th), has a  field-goal percentage of 45.5 (8th), has 2.8 blocks per game (1st) and 6.8 def. rpg (2nd).

Macaulay's scoring numbers are particularly impressive when compared to the rest of her career. She averaged 3.0 ppg as a freshman, 4.6 ppg as a sophomore and 9.7 ppg as a junior.

BIGTIME BLOCKING
The Owls put on a blocking clinic in their recent win vs. Saint Louis on Feb. 10. As a team they blocked 13 shots, just two shy of the program record set back in 1987. Victoria Macaulay blocked a career-high nine shots, also two shy of the program record, set in the same game in 1987. With 187 career blocks, Macaulay sits in sixth place all-time and is just two blocks away from tying for fourth. She has blocked at least six shots in three of the last four games, and currently ranks 13th among all players in NCAA Division I with 2.8 blocks per game.

VILLANOVA CLAIMS BIG 5 TITLE
The Big 5 title was claimed already this season by Villanova who, for a second year in a row, went a perfect 4-0 in the city series. Temple is currently 1-2 with losses to Villanova and La Salle, and a win over Penn. Last year, the Owls finished alone in second place with a record of 3-1. The 2010-11 Big 5 title was Temple's alone as the Owls edged Saint Joseph's 52-49 on Feb. 23, completing a 4-0 sweep. The previous year was the first in six seasons that Temple had NOT won or shared the title, and this year now marks the third time that has happened in the last nine years. In 2010-11, the title was Temple's ninth overall and eighth outright since the Philadelphia Big 5 tradition was established for women's basketball in 1979-80.

MACAULAY DOUBLES UP 10 TIMES
Victoria Macaulay notched her 10th double-double of the season in Temple's win vs. Rhode Island on Feb. 10, scoring 13 points and leading all players with 10 rebounds. Her ninth double-double came at UMass on Feb. 3 when she scored 14 points and led all players with 12 rebounds. She also recently recorded double-doubles against La Salle (19 points, 15 rebounds) and St. Bonaventure (game-high 23 points, game-high 12 rebounds). Other highlights among her double-doubles include a game-high 25 points to go with a game-high 13 rebounds at Kent St. on Dec. 6, a game-high 20 points to go with a game-high 11 rebounds in a win vs. Syracuse on Dec. 2, and a career-high 27 points to go with 10 boards in a win vs. Northeastern on Nov. 17.
