PHILADELPHIA - All fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of the fight against breast cancer as Temple women's basketball hosts Xavier on Wednesday, Feb. 20 in its annual Play 4Kay game. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in McGonigle Hall. The team has set up a website to raise money for the Play 4Kay Foundation: http://play4kay.org/templeowls.

Play 4Kay is an opportunity for a nation of coaches to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The official charity is the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in partnership with The V Foundation and Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on January 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease. With the creation of the Fund, Kay hoped to raise money to further cutting-edge research conducted by the nation's top doctors and medical experts to allow more and more cancer patients to have access to experimental drugs and clinical trials. Since the majority of these research projects are privately funded, these researchers desperately need our support in order for them to continue to make strides in finding a cure for cancer.

To date, the Fund has raised over $7 million for cancer research.

THE OPENING TIP
•Temple is coming off a tough, 49-41 OT loss at Saint Joseph's on Feb. 17, breaking a streak of 13 straight wins against the Hawks dating back to 2006...The Owls held SJU to 29.4 percent shooting from the field, but shot a season-low 25.9 percent themselves.
•In the Owls' other game last week, they defeated Rhode Island at home, 56-45...Three players scored in double figures, led by Sally Kabengano with 14 points, and Victoria Macaulay with her 10th double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
•The Owls had won two straight before the loss at SJU, with the first being a close one vs. Saint Louis, 54-50 on Feb. 10...The game saw eight ties and 10 lead changes, but the Owls got big performances from all five starters to hold off the Billikens.
•Temple currently leads all teams in NCAA Division I in three-point field goal defense at 23.4 percent.
•Macaulay has blocked at least five shots in four of the last five games, and ranks 11th in the nation with 2.88 blocks per game.
•Over the last five games, redshirt junior Natasha Thames has averaged 10.6 rebounds per game...She grabbed a career-high 15 boards at Charlotte (Feb. 6) and recorded 14 rebounds at Saint Joseph's (Feb. 17).
•Before this year, the Owls had not lost back-to-back Atlantic 10 games since the 2002-03 season...The five conference losses are now the most since Temple went 9-7 in the A-10 in 2002-03.
•Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza got the 100th win of her career in the Owls' 67-59 win at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 13...The milestone came in Temple's A-10 opener, and against the only team to defeat the Owls in the A-10 regular season last year.
•Macaulay recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds vs. Rhode Island on Feb. 13.
•Seven of Temple's losses this season were to teams with strong records and strong RPI's, Saint Joseph's (18-6), Charlotte (17-4), Duquesne (14-3), Georgetown (9-4), Michigan State (12-1), Villanova (9-1) and Auburn (8-2).
•Temple was the only team to defeat Syracuse during its non-conference season, back on Dec. 2...The Orangewomen are now 21-3 and ranked 21st in the AP Poll Poll...Their only other losses came to #3/2 Connecticut and Villanova.
•Temple has six freshmen on a roster of 11, making the Owls the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season (San Jose State is in the top spot).
•Xavier is 9-15 overall and 3-7 in the Atlantic 10...The Musketeers lost eight straight through the end of January, but have since won three of the last four including two in a row...Xavier is coming off a 59-40 win vs. Rhode Island.

SCOUTING XAVIER
Xavier is 9-15 overall and 3-7 in the Atlantic 10. The Musketeers lost eight straight from Dec. 29 through the end of January, but have since won three of the last four including two in a row, and are coming off a 59-40 win vs. Rhode Island. Amber Gray leads Xavier with 11.4 ppg, and is one of three players averaging at least 6.1 rpg. Three of her teammates average between 9.0 and 9.5 points per game in a balanced offense for the Musketeers. Head coach Amy Waugh is in her second season at the helm after two years as an assistant.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST XAVIER
Temple and Xavier are meeting for the 24th. The Owls won a string of six in a row from 2004-07, but the Musketeers have won three of the last four and six of the last eight. Most recently, however, it was the Owls with a big win, 64-38 on Jan. 24, 2012 in Cincinnati.

STREAK AGAINST THE HAWKS ENDS IN OT
Temple's streak of wins against Saint Joseph's, which had reached 13, ended on Feb. 17 in overtime at Hagan Arena. It was the first OT game of the year for the Owls, and the extra period did not match up to the intensity of the rest of the game. TheOwls go the first bucket but did not score again, losing the game 49-41. Temple's Big 5 season is now complete, with a record of 1-3.

FUTURE OWLS
Three recruits have signed to play for Temple in 2013-14, with more expected in the future. The three so far are: Feyonda Fitzgerald, a 5-7 guard out of Norfolk, Va. (Lake Taylor HS, Boo Williams AAU), Taylor Robinson, a 6-4 center out of St. Louis, Mo. (Ladue Horton Watkins HS, Midwest Elite AAU) and Safiya Martin, a 6-4 center out of Fayetteville, Ga. (Sandy Creek HS, Georgia Pearls AAU).

DOWNTOWN DEFENDERS
After being stingy on three-point defense all season, the Owls have recently taken it to a new level and they now lead all teams in NCAA Division I in three-point field goal defense at 23.4%. They held Richmond to a single trey in 15 attempts on Jan. 31, held UMass to 3-of-18 (16.7%) from behind the arc on Feb. 3, held Charlotte to 2-of-10 shooting (20%) from three-point range on Feb. 6, and held Saint Joseph's to just 1-of-8 on Feb. 17.

MACAULAY TAKING CHARGE
Along with leading the team in a number of categories on the stat sheet, senior center Victoria Macaulay ranks high among all Atlantic 10 players in five areas. She is averaging 14.2 ppg (6th), 9.2 rpg (5th), has a  field-goal percentage of 43.8 (8th), has 2.9 blocks per game (1st) and 6.8 def. rpg (2nd). Macaulay's scoring numbers are particularly impressive when compared to the rest of her career. She averaged 3.0 ppg as a freshman, 4.6 ppg as a sophomore and 9.7 ppg as a junior.

STARTERS GET IT DONE
Temple has relied on its bench at times this season, but in its four recent wins (out of six games), it has been the starters' time to shine. All but 11 points (out of 237) were scored by the Owls' five starters in those four wins combined. Four of them finished in double figures in wins vs. Richmond on Jan. 31 and Saint Louis on Feb. 10, and three did so in a win at UMass on Feb. 3 and a win vs. Rhode Island on Feb. 13. Highlights of those performances  included Tyonna Williams scoring a career-high 23 points at UMass, and Victoria Macaulay leading the Owls with 15 at Charlotte and 16 vs. Saint Louis. The five starters also accounted for 147 of 157 rebounds, 32 of 36 steals and 59 of 61 assists.

BIGTIME BLOCKING
The Owls put on a blocking clinic in their recent win vs. Saint Louis on Feb. 10. As a team they blocked 13 shots, just two shy of the program record set back in 1987. Victoria Macaulay blocked a career-high nine shots, also two shy of the program record, set in the same game in 1987. With 192 career blocks, Macaulay now sits alone in fourth place all-time in program history. She has blocked at least five shots in four of the last five games, and currently ranks 11th among all players in NCAA Division I with 2.88 blocks per game.
