PHILADELPHIA—Hosting its only home meet of the season, Temple Women's Gymnastics earned second place with a score of 189.825 at the fifth annual Ken Anderson Memorial Invitational, held at McGonigle Hall on Saturday. The Owls, who were event champions on beam, were only outdone by Bridgeport in the other three events. The Purple Knights won the meet with a high score of 193.975, while Temple finished ahead of West Chester (184.875) and Ursinius (183.075) to pick up its first two wins of the season.

Taking first place on beam, which has been Temple's strongest event this season, the Owls combined for a score of 47.900 as a team in the event.

Junior Sylvie Borschel led the way for the Owls with her score of 9.725 to rank third among all gymnasts.

Captain Heather Zaniewski placed close to her teammate, having a 9.650,  which was ahead of all-arounders Alexis Arena (9.6) and senior Jean Alban (9.475). Sophomore Taylor Rakus' score of 9.450 bolstered the first place finish for the Owls.

The Owls earned second place scores in the other three events.

Freshman Hannah  Popper hit her routine on bars for the first time in her collegiate career. Her performance, that earned her a 9.6, spurred her to first place among her teammtes and stood strong enough for seventh overall.

Comprising the 45.625 team score on bars, Arena (9.450) and Alban (9.4) placed 11th and 12th, respectively, while senior Ebone Grant (8.650) and junior Brittanie DeMeo rounded out the scoring.

Starting the competition on the vault, Temple gathered its most points among the four events, taking a 48.275.

Sophomore Stephanie Verry tied for fifth overall with TU's highest score in the event with her 9.750. Verry's teammates finished with scores close to hers, as only Ursinus' Kristin Aichele separated Temple's other four gymnasts that were credited in the scoring.

Classmates Lauren Capone posted a career-high score of 9.700 and Alexis Arena, who took second place in the all-around, landed a vault routine that earned her a 9.625 for a tie with her teammate and fellow all-arounder Brittanie DeMeno. Junior and team captain Heather Zaniewski rounded out the scoring for the Owls on vault with her score of 9.575.

Verry carried over her momentum into the floor exercise, where she has been consistent all season. The second year gymnast from Lowell, Mass earned third place among all participants with a career-high and TU's best score of 9.825 on the mat.

The Owls racked up an impressive combined total of 48.025 on the floor.

Capone turned in a 9.725 to earn herself another career-high score on the day, while senior Jean Alban, who was also competing in all four events, demonstrated a routine that earned her 9.675.

Temple, now 2-13 on the year, will train for next Sunday's meet at Ursinus College, which is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
