Softball Opens Season at Phoenix Clash Tournament, Drops Two on Opening Day

2.23.13 | Softball

ELON, N.C. – The 2013 softball season is not starting the way the Temple squad would like it. The Owls dropped two on their opening day at the Phoenix Clash Tournament, hosted by Elon at Hunt Softball Park on February 23-24. TU fell to the host team, 8-3, to kick off the season before dropping a 5-1 decision to Hampton.

In the opener, the Phoeneix got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first, before Temple got its first run of the season when freshman Leah Lucas sent a shot over the left field fence for her first career home run and to cut the score in half, 2-1, in the top of the second. The Cherry and White tacked on two more in the top of the third to go ahead 3-2 when junior Sarah Prezioso delivered a two-run double to right field.

It was all Phoenix from there on out, however, as the home team scored three in the bottom of the third and another three in the bottom of the fifth while holding TU scoreless the rest of the way for the 8-3 win.

Sophomore Lacey McKeon and freshman Kelsey Dominik led Temple with two hits each. When she scored on Prezioso's single in the third, senior Ali Robinson became TU's all-time leader in runs scored with 109.

Sophomore Jessica Mahoney (0-1) took the loss for the Owls, going 4.1 innings, giving up nine hits, seven runs and walking two. Dominik pitched 1.2 innings in relief for her first career appearance, allowing two hits and one run, while issuing three free passes.

Against Hampton, Temple took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of one hit and one error in the frame. McKeon led off with an infield single before Robinson reached on an error. McKeon advanced to third on the play to put runners on the corners. One out and a Robinson stolen bag later, junior Stephanie Pasquale hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate McKeon.

Hampton evened it in the third, before going ahead 2-1 with one more in the fifth. The Pirates put the game away with a three-run top of the seventh, followed by sitting the Owls down in order to end the game.

TU was not without its opportunities, stranding eight on the bases throughout the contest. McKeon, Robinson, Pasquale and junior Devynne Nelons each had one hit for Temple.

Brooklin White (0-1) took the loss, tossing 4.0 innings with five hits surrendered, two runs and four walks. Mahoney threw 3.0 innings of relief, allowing four hits and three runs while walking three.

Temple is back in action Sunday morning with a 10 a.m. game against Saint Peter's, before closing out the weekend with a 12:15 rematch against Hampton.
