Prezioso Leads Owls to First Win of the Season, Squad Splits on Final Day of Phoenix Clash Tournament

2.24.13 | Softball

ELON, N.C. – The Temple softball team picked up its first win of the season with a 12-2 five-inning win over Saint Peter's at the Phoenix Clash Tournament on Sunday, February 24. The Owls then dropped an 8-4 decision to Hampton on the final day of the event held at Hunt Softball Park and hosted by Elon.

Junior Sarah Prezioso had a day against the Peacocks, going 2-for-3 with a career-high six RBI in just three innings. The junior did all of her damage in an 11 run, five hit third inning for the Owls. Prezioso had a two-run single up the middle in the early part of the inning, before delivering a two-out grand slam over the right field fence later in the frame.

Freshman Jessica Tolmie (1-0) was in action on the mound for the first time, getting the win in 5.0 innings of work. The rookie allowed just two hits, walked three and struck out four.

In a rematch with Hampton, TU jumped out to a 3-1 lead after two full innings. The Cherry & White used a three-run second, thanks to a two-run single from junior Stephanie Pasquale, to take a 3-0 lead. The Pirates got one back in the bottom of the frame, but that was all the scoring there was until the top of the sixth.

TU went ahead 4-1 in the sixth when senior Kayla Cook homered to left field with one out. The lead was quickly erased when Hampton scored seven times on six hits in the bottom half of the inning to move ahead 8-4. The Pirates took advantage of three extra base hits and a walk in the frame.

Senior Gina Sciarrone led Temple with two hits, going 2-for-3 in the contest. Junior Brooklin White (0-2) took the loss for TU, allowing four hits and four runs in 0.2 innings of work. Freshman Kelsey Dominik started the game, going 5.1 innings, allowing nine hits, four runs, three walks and fanning two.

Temple (1-3) continues its challenging early season tournament schedule with play at the Citrus Classic on March 1-3 where it will face #18 Louisville, #9 Oregon, Fairfield, Georgetown and Georgia Tech.
