Offense Struggles On Opening Day of Citrus Classic, Owls Shutout Twice

3.1.13 | Softball

ORLANDO, Fla. – Offense was hard to come by for the Temple softball team on Friday, March 1, as the Owls dropped two games by way of shutout on the first day of the 2013 Citrus Classic, taking place at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex. TU fell 8-0 to #15 Louisville (13-3) in its first game of the day, before dropping a 2-0 decision to Fairfield (3-2) in the nightcap.

Against the Cardinals, junior Sarah Prezioso got Temple's first hit of the game in the top of the first, singling to right field. The hit was the 100th of her career. Senior Ali Robinson had walked one batter earlier, but the Owls stranded both runners to end the inning with nothing on the board.

Louisville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in its half of the first. Katie Keller led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and scored on a double from Alicija Wolny. Hannah Kiyohara also had an RBI single in the frame.

The Cardinals tacked on three more runs in the fourth, and another three in the fifth to end the game early with the eight-run rule.

After allowing the first inning threat, Louisville pitcher Rachel LeCoq kept the Owls off the base paths until the fourth when junior Stephanie Pasquale reached on an error. Temple's best opportunity came in the top of the fifth when the team finally got to LaCoq for three hits, including a double from sophomore Julia Kastner. Freshman Kelsey Dominik and sophomore Lacey McKeon also had singles in the frame, but the Cardinals once again got out of it unscathed.

LeCoq (5-1) got the win, allowing four hits and striking out four in 4.0 innings. Junior Brooklin White (0-3) took the loss, allowing eight runs, six earned, and striking out two in 4.1 innings.

In the second game of the day, it was a scoreless battle through three before Fairfield got on the board with one run in the top of the fourth. The Stags added to that with one more in the sixth for the 2-0 final. Once again, the Owls had their opportunities, leaving one on base in the second after Pasquale led off with a single, stranding two in the fifth, and one more in the bottom of the sixth.

Rebecca Trott (3-0) earned the win with a complete game effort, allowing just three hits, walking two and fanning seven. Sophomore Jessica Mahoney (0-2) took the loss after allowing nine hits, one earned run, walking three and striking out three in 7.0 innings of work.

Temple (1-5) is back in action at 10 a.m. on Saturday, taking on Georgetown, before facing #10 Oregon at 12:15 p.m.
