No Offensive Woes for Softball in 19-13 Win Over Georgetown; Owls Fall 11-4 to #10 Oregon

ORLANDO, Fla. – Just one day after being shutout twice, the Temple softball team exploded for 23 runs in two games on the second day of the 2013 Citrus Classic, defeating Georgetown 19-13 and falling to #10 Oregon 11-4 on Saturday. The tournament is taking place at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.
Against Georgetown, the Owls scored in every inning but the seventh on their way to the victory. It was the most runs the team has scored in a single game since plating 24 against Coppin State in 2008.
The Owls built a 12-1 lead through three innings thanks to a four-run first and a six-run third. In the opening frame, junior Sarah Prezioso and senior Kayla Cook each had run-scoring doubles, while junior Stephanie Pasquale delivered an RBI single in the inning.
In the third, the Cherry & White batted a round, taking advantage of five hits and a Hoyas error to score six times. Cook had another two-run double in the inning, while freshman Annie Marcopolus sent a two-run shot over the right center fence, and Pasquale knocked in two with a double down the right field line.
After a three-run top of the fourth made it 15-1, Georgetown mounted a comeback, scoring four in the fourth and preventing a run-rule loss by plating eight in the fifth to draw within 17-13. The Owls pitching staff shut them down the rest of the way, and TU tacked on two more insurance runs in the top of the sixth.
Several Temple batters recorded multiple hits in the contest, including Marcopolus (3-for-4), Pasquale (4-for-6), Prezioso (3-for-6) and Cook (2-for-4). Senior Ali Robinson (2-for-2) also recorded more than one hit. Pasquale, who collected her 100th career hit with her fourth in the game, had three doubles to go along with six RBI, while Cook and Marcopolus each batted in four runs.
It was a group effort on the mound with junior Kylie Kristovich (1-0) picking up the win in 0.2 innings of work, allowing four hits, five runs and two walks. Kristovich came on in relief of junior starter Brooklin White who struggled with control, walking seven batters in 3.1 innings despite allowing just three hits and four runs. Freshman Jessica Tolmie got in 0.2 innings of work, giving up five hits, four runs and striking out two. Sophomore Jessica Mahoney rounded out the rotation, closing the final 2.1 innings, giving up just two hits and fanning four.
The Owls came out a little flat against the nationally ranked Ducks in game two, falling in a 2-0 hole after two innings. TU put a run on the board in the bottom of the third to cut the score in half when Robinson collected the third single of the inning, driving in Cook, who had singled to open the frame.
After Oregon added two more in the top of the fourth, Temple tied it up at 4-4 with a three-spot in the bottom of the inning. TU got singles from freshman Kelsey Dominik, sophomore Julia Kastner, Marcopolus and Robinson in the inning, all with two outs.
The Ducks pulled away, however, scoring three in the fifth and four in the sixth while holding the Owls scoreless the rest of the way for the 11-4 victory.
Mahoney (0-3) went the distance for Temple, striking out a career-high eight batters while allowing 11 hits and walking eight. At the plate, Marcopolus, Robinson and Kastner each collected two hits in the game.
Temple (2-6) closes out play at the Florida tournament with a 9 a.m. game against Georgia Tech on Sunday, March 3.
